Safety Data Sheets
The Hazard Communication Standard requires that the chemical manufacturer, distributor, or importer provide Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for each hazardous chemical to downstream users to communicate the hazards associated with the chemical. The SDS includes information on the following:
- Properties of each chemical
- Physical, health, and environmental health hazards
- Protective measures
- Safety precautions for handling, storing, and transporting the chemical
Safety Data Sheets have a 16-section format.

EHRS maintains a library of Safety Data Sheets for Facilities Management. The SDSs for the clinical and research enterprises are maintained in BioRAFT. SDSs are available by contacting EHRS or from internet sources such as search engines or the manufacturer/distributor websites.
Products used by Facilities Management must be reviewed by EHRS prior to use. EHRS will recommend the need to substitute for another material if the product is deemed hazardous. In addition, EHRS will recommend the required personal protective equipment to be used when working with the product.
