Specific Job Cover Letter Guide

When you are applying to a job, writing a cover letter can be a daunting task. No two job descriptions are the same and; therefore, no two cover letters you write should be either. This guide is here as a starting point for writing a cover letter. Revise and evolve your cover letter as you progress in your career from internships and co-ops to full-time employment after graduation and beyond.

Schedule an appointment with a Steinbright staff member or attend a cover letter workshop to learn more about crafting effective cover letters or to have your cover letter reviewed.

Dear Mr./Ms./Dr. Last Name of Receiver,

Paragraph 1 – Introduction
Tell the reader why you are writing, and name the position you are pursuing. You may state where you saw the position opening. If you have a networking contact at this company, you should refer to that person in the first paragraph. Remember, the first paragraph of a cover letter should spark the interest of the reader.

Paragraph 2 – Interest
Explain why you are interested in the position and employer. Include information you have gathered about the organization, and list important facts and details. Explain why this company is a good fit for you by relating your knowledge, skills, and abilities to their organization, mission, goals, etc.

Paragraph 3 – Experience
Detail past experience and how the skills you have developed make you a good candidate for the position. Refer to your résumé, but do not summarize it. Focus on one or two skills that correspond with what the position requires. Remember that this should be structured more like a narrative — your résumé is where you simply list experiences and accomplishments.

Paragraph 4 – Closing
Thank the receiver for reviewing your résumé and considering you for the position. Indicate that you would appreciate an opportunity to discuss the position in further detail at a later date.

Sincerely,
