Tutorials: Windows XP Professional Upgrade
The following documentation refers to performing an Operating System Upgrade from Windows XP Home
to Windows XP Professional. Drexel University has a site license for the upgrade version of
Windows XP Professional. According to Microsoft, this requires having either Windows 9x, Windows NT 4
Workstation (including service packs), or Windows 2000 Professional (including service packs). The
documentation below refers to an XP Home to Professional upgrade, what you encounter when upgrading
from other Operating Systems may look different.
While Drexel recommends Windows XP Professional over the Home version, running the Home version
should not present any problems for students that have it installed on their PC. If you choose to
install this upgrade, it is something you will need to perform yourself with the help of the documentation
below. You should expect the upgrade to take at least an hour; the actual time may vary depending on how
fast your PC is and the network traffic throughout campus at that time.
Before you begin the upgrade, you will need program to extract
zip files, such as WinZip (www.winzip.com) or PowerArchiver (www.powerarchiver.com)
and you need to know your Drexel domain ID and password,
since you will need to access a resource on the Drexel domain. This
should be the same as your email ID and password, if it's not please
go to http://accounts.drexel.edu
and change your domain password to match your email password. Your
PC does not need to be a member of the Drexel domain nor do you
need to be physically logged into the Drexel domain to perform this
upgrade.
