Lovecraft Lives

October 23, 2015

This Halloween season, enter into the heart of evil and join us for an evening of spine-chilling stories presented by the Drexel Co-Op Theatre Company. Created and directed by Adrienne Mackey, founder of Swim Pony Performing Arts, in collaboration with students from the Co-Op Theater Company, FROM BENEATH, IT LURKS: A LOVECRAFTIAN HALLOWEEN HORROR will send audiences on a journey with ragtag storytellers as they scale mountains of madness and monstrosity, bringing to life stories inspired by the unholy creations of iconic horror author H.P. Lovecraft. The show runs from October 29 through November 1 in the URBN Annex Black Box Theater (3401 Filbert Street), with free entrance on Halloween night for all audience members who arrive in costume.

Regarded as a deeply influential 20th century master of horror and science fiction, H.P. Lovecraft’s short stories, novels and novellas include The Call of Cthulhu, The Thing and The Whisperer in the Darkness, all of which have been adapted into films. The Co-Op Theatre’s production, FROM BENEATH, IT LURKS, brings these stories to life in a way that has only been described as “funny, funny, funny…poop your pants scary!” With a tagline like that, this is a show you likely won’t want to miss.

Mackey’s Philadelphia-based experimental theatre company, Swim Pony Performing Arts, presents unique live performances that expand our sense of play, defy tradition, and allow audiences to transcend the everyday. Through Swim Pony, Mackey frequently explores “cross pollination,” or creativity across multiple artistic mediums. In addition to teaching at Drexel, where she was in residence with her company in 2013, she has taught at Rutgers Camden and Pig Iron’s School for Advanced Performance Training and has been a guest artist at Swarthmore, Bryn Mawr and Arcadia.
