One Book, One Philadelphia’s 2009 selection The Soloist by Steve Lopez focuses on the topic of homelessness. Influenced by Lopez’s personal story with homeless musician Nathanial Ayers, Drexel University writing intensive tutors are attending four workshops to create short stories that reflect on the homelessness around them. These stories will be published on the Free Library of Philadelphia website: www.freelibrary.org All workshops will be held in 0032 MacAlister and are open to any Drexel student, staff or faculty member.
The workshop dates are:
Wednesday, Jan 14 12 PM-1PM
Friday, Jan 30 12 PM-1PM
Tuesday, Feb 3 4PM-5PM
Thursday, Feb 26, 4 PM-5PM
Friday, March 13, 12PM-1PM
High school students from Philadelphia’s Science Leadership Academy taking part in a writing workshop at Drexel University will read The Soloist, compose short stories about issues raised in The Soloist like mental illness and helping others. Some students may participate in this year’s One Book, One Philadelphia Essay contest for high school students.
Winter term 2009 students enrolled in UNIV 320:
Writing/Peer Tutoring Workshop will participate in One Book, One Philadelphia by reading The Soloist for this course. Using the theme of the book as a bouncing off point, they will write a sort story or adapt the book into another genre or write an essay tying the theme of the book to their understanding of peer tutoring practices and/or building a peer supported community at the Writing Center.
