Picture walking down Chestnut street and seeing the name of a beloved educational theorist as the name of a high school written in bold metal letters at the top of a building. This is what happened to Writing Program Director, Harriet Millan. When she entered the Freire Charter School she knew she had found the perfect site for helping student tutors in training experience the teachings of Paulo Freire. Thus the University Writing Program's partnership with the PEACE Project of the Freire Charter School was born. Drexel tutors in training help Freire High School students with their writing and observe the Freirian classroom as part of their coursework for UNIV 320. After reading works by Freire and his followers, UNIV 320 students write editorials for local newspapers to help promote progressive education.
The PEACE Project
The PEACE Project is a personalized and real world learning program at Philadelphia's Freire Charter School. The PEACE Project's growth is a major initiative of the Board of Director's five-year plan to bring the school closer to its vision. The PEACE Project serves 45 of the 450 students at Freire Charter School.
