The University Writing Program helps foster a culture of writing across Drexel University. It does so in a number of ways that are mutually
reinforcing:
We provide one-on-one peer tutoring conferences for undergraduate students
to help them meet the graduation requirement of successfully passing three
Writing Intensive(WI) courses. Working both in the Writing Center and online, these conferences focus students on the recursive processes of improving writing.
We offer UNIV 320, a workshop in writing and in helping others with their
writing, a three-credit hour elective designed to train and support
students who wish to work as paid, peer tutors in writing (WITS).
We assist faculty offering WI courses both personally and, in a larger
sense, through sponsoring public events focused on writing--workshops, forums, and pedagogical discussions about good writing and how to work toward achieving it.
We offer writing support tailored specifically to the needs of specific majors and Colleges, particularly for students in Engineering and the LeBow College of Business
We develop and maintain a culture of assessment to measure students'
progress as writers and, self-reflexively, to assess the Writing Program
itself, so that we may continuously improve it. Using Waypoint and other writing assessment tools, we bring technology to the task of streamlining writing critiques and editing, while mining its database functions to help us gauge students' writing longitudinally.
We focus attention on the critical importance of writing and the power
of language to transform by sponsoring writing events, visits by
distinguished and emerging writers, and by offering the Honors Recognition in Creative
Writing interested students.
We reach beyond Drexel to sponsor Creative Writing Forum, our online
outreach to writers in the community and across the nation. And we have been involved in city-wide efforts to recognize and improve written communication.
We work closely with SmartSet, Drexel's interactive,multi-media Internet
magazine of culture, science, technology, the arts, and health.
In these ways, the University Writing Program, since its inception in 1998,
has helped transform Drexel into a university where writing is practiced
extensively, critiqued intensively, and valued immensely. We look forward to working with you in valuing and improving writing at Drexel.
