FAQ
What is a "charrette"?
A charrette is an intensive and often collaborative period of design activity. it is a French word, meaning cart, but its current meaning is derived from l'Ecole des Beaux Arts students of the 1800s, who would hurriedly pull their work in a cart (or "en charrette") to deliver it by a deadline for grading.
Who is eligible to participate in the charrette?
Students of all majors and years at Drexel University are encouraged to apply. The Teams will be interdisciplinary and will be organized so that each team has a mix of majors.
How can I contribute if I'm not a design student?
Design is often an interdisciplinary activity and the most creative solutions to past charrette problems have relied upon information from many sources, not just design-based fields. Although you may not be a "designer," you can successfully participate by being a creative thinker and problem solver.
Can faculty participate?
Yes. Faculty from all majors at the University are invited to participate. The events include a lecture, two panels of speakers, reviews of student work, and a final review on Monday evening, April 12, at 6:30pm. See the Schedule for exact times and locations. Please email charrette@drexel.edu if you're interested in speaking on a panel or attending any events.
Where is the charrette held?
All teams will be assigned workspaces on the 4th floor of the Main Building and all work should be completed in these designated areas (other than site visits and wood shop work).
When can my team start working on the charrette project?
Preliminary background information will be posted online on Monday, April 5. Your team should plan to review this information ahead of time. the project will be announced Thursday, April 8, at 8:00pm following the lecture in the Mandell Theatre (see the Schedule for more information). A public panel presentation on Friday, April 9, at 6L30om, will provide your team with additional useful information about the project. On Saturday, April 9th, at 1:00pm, another presentation for charrette participants will help you refine your ideas for the project.
When will my team work together on the project after it's announced?
Friday, April 9, is an independent work day and teams are welcome to begin using their designated workspaces on the 4th floor of Main Building at hat point. All teams should plan to work together Saturday and Sunday (the Main Building is open all day and night, just be sure to bring your ID). it's up to your team to set a work schedule.
Will I have time to eat?
Yes, your team can schedule breaks from work. The charrette organizational committee will also provide food for all participants on Saturday and Sunday: coffee in the morning, plus lunch and dinner both days.
Should I bring a laptop?
Yes, if you have one, but be sure to keep it with you at all times. There s also a computer lab in Room 417 on the 4th floor of the Main Building. These computers are equipped with AutoCAD, Revit, 3DSMax, Rhino, SketchUp, Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office and other useful programs. There are plotters available in the plotting office on the 4th floor as well.
How will my team's work be assessed?
At two designated times during the charrette weekend, faculty, professionals, and other invited guests will be available to provide feedback to every team. The charrette will culminate in a final review of all teams' work. This will be held on the 4th floor of the Main Building and is open to the public.
What are the requirements for the final presentation?
Each team is expected to produce (4) 11"x17" presentation boards of work and one model. More detailed requirements will be provided when the project is announced.
What will the final presentation entail?
Your team will present your project by describing the process work and the final designs to a panel or critics. The critics will be faculty, professionals and other invited guests and they will give you feedback on your work.
What if I have a prior commitment the weekend of charrette?
In applying to participate in the charrette you are committing to be involved in the entire event. This includes the Thursday evening lecture and project announcement; Friday evening panel discussion sessions; all day team work sessions on Saturday and Sunday; and participation in Monday evening final review. Arrangements can be made with your team for special circumstances.
