An Evening with Jane Golden: Arts Leader, Advocate and Luminary

Jane Golden

Led by Jane Golden, the Mural Arts Program has turned Philadelphia into the home of the most important public art project in the United States. The program started in 1984 as a six-week anti-graffiti project for youth. Twenty-three years later, Ms. Golden, dozens of artists, neighborhood residents and volunteers have created over two thousand murals in the city of Philadelphia - more murals than any other city in the world. The Mural Arts Program has not only transformed the walls of the city and provided a source of pride for neighborhoods, but it also offers free mural-making and art education classes to under-served youth and employs over 300 artists per year.

The success and impact of the Mural Arts Program is due largely to Ms. Golden's belief that art is a unifying force and her deep commitment to youth development. Don't miss the opportunity to hear this major force in the arts tell her inspiring, compelling story and learn how you can help!

An Evening with Chuck Barris

Chuck Barris

Find out why Barris chose Drexel after sampling 5 other colleges and how his Drexel education prepared him to become a multi-millionaire, television legend and CIA agent!

Chuck Barris '53, Hon. '01, a Philadelphia native and television legend, sometimes called the "godfather of reality television" is known for creating numerous hit shows such as The Gong Show, The Dating Game, and The Newlywed Game, which put ordinary people front and center. These shows capitalized on the idea that there are plenty of people who will do anything to get on television and millions more who will want to watch them. When NBC dropped his show The Parent Game, Barris bought the show back from NBC and sold it to local stations all over the country. This was the beginning of the multibillion dollar business of first-run syndication television.

Barris will talk about his career in television as well as his new book, The Big Question, based on an audacious premise about a reality show of the future. Barris has authored several other books including You and Me, Babe and the autobiographies The Game Show King: A Confession and Confessions of a Dangerous Mind: An Unauthorized Autobiography (which became a major motion picture starring George Clooney).

The Impact of Globalization on the Cultural Sector

Adrian Ellic
Featuring Adrian Ellis

The lecture by Adrian Ellis titled "The Impact of Globalization on the Cultural Sector" is Free and open to public with a reception to follow. Adrian Ellis, one of today's foremost thinkers on cultural management, will be speaking about the impact of globalization on non-profit cultural institutions in the United States and Europe. Globalization is a short-hand expression for the effects of the accelerated and increased global circulation of capital, goods, services, people and ideas that has resulted from technological advances and diminished regulation. It is having a profound impact on the social, economic and cultural fabric of nations throughout the world. It is hardly surprising therefore that it is also affecting the cultural sector. In his lecture Ellis will also explore the need to address new audiences in new ways; the growth in strategic international partnerships; the growth in the volume and sophistication of restitution claims and the questioning of the legitimacy of such concepts as the 'encyclopedic' museum. The lecture is presented in partnership with The LeBow College of Business and the Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts and Design on Tuesday, May 22 at 6 PM in Bossone Auditorium.

Ellis is the founder, owner and managing partner of AEA Consulting, a firm that specializes in strategic operations and facilities planning for the cultural sector, he has worked with highly regarded institutions such as the British Council, The Ford Foundation, J. Paul Getty Trust, Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, The Frick Collection, Jazz at Lincoln Center, National Gallery - London, and many others.

The Leonard Pearlstein Gallery presents: Life's Joys - Life's Disappointments
New Commemorative Sculpture: Michael Grothusen

Life's Joys - Life's Disappointments

The Leonard Pearlstein Gallery, in the Westphal College at Drexel University, is proud to announce its upcoming fall exhibit, Life’s Joys–Life’s Disappointments, by Philadelphia artist Michael Grothusen.

In Life’s Joys – Life’s Disappointments, Grothusen continues to work on an architectural scale, creating two steel sculptures that are reminiscent of a funeral urn, trophy, or similar commemorative object. The traditional notion of a sculpture as a commemorative object is a distinct focus in this work, however, the exact event the sculpture is commemorating is unspecified and open to interpretation. As the title of the exhibit suggests, the viewer is asked to define the meaning of the work as a monument for his or her own successes and failures.

Since receiving his MFA in 1991 from Tyler School of Art, Grothusen’s sculpture and installations have been exhibited extensively throughout the region. The artist is well-known for his inventive use of common materials on an architectural scale.

A tri-fold exhibition card with photographs of the exhibit and an essay by curator Leah Douglas will be available at the reception.

  • EVENT DETAILS:
  • Location: Ruth Auditorium, 3215 Market Street, 125 Nesbitt Hall
  • Exhibition Dates: November 5 - December 12, 2007
  • Reception: November 14th, 6-8PM
  • Artist Talk: November 14th, 5PM, Ruth Auditorium (adjacent to the gallery)
  • Gallery Hours: Monday - Friday, 11-5PM (Closed for Thanksgiving, November 21-23)
