Pearlstein Gallery Showcases Drexel Professor's Extensive Collection of African Art and Artifacts
The Leonard Pearlstein Gallery is proud to present Communal Expressions/Ethnic Diversity: African Art from the Collection of George Starks, Jr., Professor of Music and Director of the Jazz Orchestra of Drexel University. The exhibit will be open from January 11- February 17 (reception on January 18, 5-7pm). This presentation features the extensive collection of art and artifacts that Professor Starks has compiled over the past twenty years. The collection's notable diversity creates an exhibition that ranges from distinctly utilitarian objects, such as an elaborately carved Dogon architectural shutter and bellows from the Fang people of Gabon, to a selection of Dan and Punu masks and Songye and Kota power figures. As the show title suggests, the exhibit focuses on communal expressions represented through the artwork that defines a strikingly expressive iconographic continuum.
2005-06 Arfaa Lecture Series: Architect and Historian Judith Sheine
Architect & historian Judith Sheine will offer the winter lecture in the 2005-2006 Farajollah & Maryam Badie Arfaa Lecture Series in Architecture on Thursday, January 12, 2006 at 6:30pm in the Mandell Theater (33rd & Chestnut Sts.) at Drexel University. Although his accomplishments were often slighted by the established architectural community in his lifetime, the work of Rudolph Schindler (1887-1953) is now revered by historians and designers far beyond Southern California where he practiced. One of the most thoughtful architects working in the era of early Modernism, Schindler's buildings married materials and context to create extraordinary spaces. Judith Sheine is a leading authority on Schindler, having written extensively about his work in Schindler: Composition and Construction (1993) and R. M. Schindler (2001). Sheine is also an award-winning architect, and is Chair and Professor in the Department of Architecture at the California State Polytechnic University in Pomona. This lecture is worth 2 AIA/CES Learning Units

Reiger's "King of the Corner" Debut
Peter Riegert is a world class actor whose face is known to everyone and name is known to some. You'll remember him as the conniving undergrad in ANIMAL HOUSE or as the corrupt New Jersey politician from the first season of THE SOPRANOS or from his work in CROSSING DELANCEY.
On Monday, January 30th at 7:00PM, Riegert will screen his directorial debut KING OF THE CORNER in which he stars with Isabella Rossellini, Eric Bogosian, Beverly D'Angelo and Rita Moreno. The movie is adapted (by Riegert) from the series of short stories BAD JEWS AND OTHERS and tells the story of a man struggling with life's big questions -- who are we and what is love? After the film, Riegert will do a Q&A session with the audience.
The screening and talk are free and open to the entire Drexel community, but seating is limited and first come, first serve. This event is sponsored by the Kal and Lucille Rudman Institute for Entertainment Industry Studies and AWCoMAD's Screenwriting & Playwriting Program. For further information, please call 215-895-0352.
Jim Sherraden from Hatch Show Print Will Speak at Drexel University
Jim Sherraden has been creating original artwork based on Hatch Show Print's shop archives since 1992. A Kansas native and Nashville resident since 1977, Sherraden joined forces with Hatch in 1984. Sherraden helped revive the store's past success by concentrating on its poster production and revisiting the imaginative method of letterpress printing. Letterpress dates back to the 15th century, and each unique creation is individually handcrafted and inked onto paper, producing posters that through the years have been established as a downtown Nashville landmark. The Hatch posters and Sherraden's original works re-examine the aesthetic impact on American entertainment, and revisit the curiously colorful world of dancing girls, politics, and music.
When he came to the shop in the mid-1980s, Sherraden, a successful lyricist with his name on more than forty recorded songs, was enthralled by the Hatch archive. He set about to reprint, or "re-strike" the old hand-carved images that derived not only from country music but from the entire spectrum of American entertainment enterprises Hatch served over the years, including minstrel shows and vaudeville, circuses and carnivals, silent film and "talkies," auto and boat races, rodeos and animal shows. During the process of using a single test sheet for multiple jobs on the press, he discovered that the inadvertent overlay of imagery was often as arresting as the single illustration. It must have felt very nearly like art until his friend, sculptor Alan LeQuire, told him, "Anyone can stand behind a press, throw two woodblocks on top and make a poster. You need to take it further and make it your own."
Hatch is owned and operated by the Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum and today produces work for a wide variety of clients including musicians, record labels, and cultural arts organizations.
Jim Sherraden is the co-author of Hatch Show Print: The History of a Great American Poster Shop.

Upcoming Hallmark Hall of Fame Presentation Adapted to Screen by former AW CoMAD dean Jonathan Estrin
Adapted for television by former Dean of AW CoMAD, Jonathan Estrin, THE WATER IS WIDE is based on the autobiographical novel by noted author, Pat Conroy. The story tells of free-spirited Conroy's experience as an educator on the remote Yamacraw Island, off the coast of South Carolina. His frequent clashes with both the superintendent and fellow teacher (played by Alfre Woodard of Desperate Housewives), do not affect the impact that he has on his students, as well as the lessons he learns from them. The TV movie is directed by John Kent Harrison (What the Deaf Man Heard, In Love and War), and produced by Richard Welsh (Silver Bells,The Magic of Ordinary Days) and Brent Shields (Back When We Were Grownups, Plainsong). Nielsen research tells the television industry which shows are hot and which will soon disappear from view. Their demographic information provides details of viewing habits based on age, gender, race and geographical location. In addition to measuring national and local television viewing, Nielsen collects data on Internet activity, theatrical movie box office, sales of entertainment products such as video and audio.

Author TOURE speaks about hip-hop and American culture
WEDNESDAY, APRIL 12th @ 7PM
Author TOURE speaks and presents his book NEVER DRANK THE KOOL-AID
A meet and greet reception with Toure will be held at 6pm, prior to the event. If you are interested in attending, RSVP to jne22@drexel.edu
As author Touré grapples with hip-hop's place in American culture and his own complicated responses to it, his subjects come to startling life: Embattled rapper 50 Cent's girlfriend proudly displays their young child's pint-sized, bullet-proof vest; genial MC DMX casually recalls the time he stabbed a first-grade classmate in the face; fearsome record exec Suge Knight decorates his offices with framed portraits of Lucille Ball and Elvis Presley, and soul diva Alicia Keys confesses her painfully conflicted reaction to post-9/11 patriotism. Fascinating bits of off-the-cuff sociology abound: The author compares rap collectives such as the Wu-Tang Clan and the Junior M.A.F.I.A. to traditional African family structures; the plight of the gay rapper is frankly addressed; graffiti artists play cat-and-mouse withauthorities in the pursuit of their ephemeral art.
This is a wholly involving and piercingly intelligent examination of contemporary popular culture.
RSVPs for the reception can be emailed to Jackie Eliassen at jne22@drexel.edu .No RSVP is necessary for the event itself.

Interested in Lifestyle Television? Fashion? Interior Design? Television Production?
The come learn what goes into making a lifestyle television show with The Brini Maxwell Show's producer and director Julie Harman and editor Michael DeMirjian.
The Brini Maxwell Show is enjoying a successful second season on E! Television's The Style Network. Described as part Donna Reed, part Mary Tyler Moore, Brini Maxwell makes kitsch feel classy through her unparalleled personal flair for home design, entertaining and savvy household tips.
Julie Harman is an award-winning TV Producer and Director, with more years of experience than she will admit to. She has worked on many of the shows you've come to love over the years (Hard Copy, America's Most Wanted, Ripley's Believe it or Not! and Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous among them). When she's not concocting subversive, suggestive double entendres for Miss B, Julie lives in a tony suburb outside NYC, where she declares that she is NOT a desperate housewife, and that the Botox was for migraines.
Although work takes him to New York these days, Michael DeMirjian is a lifer in the Philadelphia scene; he was born here and still annually collects at least five dozen parking violations in Old City. He's paid off these infractions for the past 17 years by working as a video editor; although there was a five month 'blank' period in '93 when he worked for Mambo Movers. Fortunately, he ditched the moving van to become a four-time nominated and one-time Emmy winner for work he created for NFL Films and Fox TV's Under the Helmet. But his most enjoyable experience to date has been cutting the simply marvelous The Brini Maxwell Show, where he never once needed to explain his jokes.
Sponsored by the Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts and Design and The Kal and Lucille Rudman Institute for Entertainment Industry Studies.

The libidinous Pantalone schemes to keep his virtuous bride chaste while, with the help of 16th century Viagra, he works his way back between the arms of his mistress. His plans are complicated by the antics of a jealous doctor, a seductive monk, a vulgar bawd, and of course the delightfully devilish servant, Arlecchino.
Director Gerre Garrett, member and director of Philadelphia's premiere sketch comedy troupe The Waitstaff, brings together scenic designer Jason Hinebaugh (Ahab: A Musical Odyssey), costume designer Bill Pollock (Theater Program Director at Drexel University), and lighting designer Robb Andersen (Korseh Dance Company) for this bawdy comedy.
This eight member cast, including special guest artist Brendon Gawel bring the characters and the vulgar humor of commedia dell' arte to life in this spectacular production.
The Son of Arlecchino will close out the 2005/2006 season for the Drexel Players, Drexel University's Theater ensemble. The Department of Performing Arts at Drexel University exists to enhance the cultural literacy of all Drexel students by providing them with opportunities to study, create, perform, manage and experience dance, music, and theatre. To learn more, please visit www.drexel.edu/comad.

In the Pearlstein Gallery: Time Lines by Dennis Will
The Leonard Pearlstein Gallery is proud to present Time Lines, an exhibit of color pencil drawings by Dennis Will. Will, a long time faculty member and professor in the Art & Art History Department at Drexel University, has played an integral role in shaping the Foundations curriculum in the Art & Art History Department. His commitment to teaching the fundamental principles of design is demonstrated in his profound but adept use of color, line, and form in this recent body of work.
Will’s use of primary visual elements, and light and time, aid in the building of spaces that express full emptiness and silent sound. The delicacy and intricacy of his lines create a matrix, rhythmically hovering, imbedded somewhere in the milieu of his primary form landscapes. His use of color reinforces the notion of a boundless plasticity layered with a sense of time and quiet consideration. While structured by an overarching formalism and composition, the playfulness and pleasure in manipulating illusionistic space should not be overlooked as an important component in the virtue of Will's artwork.

Pre-Release Screening of New Documentary The Heart of the Game
A pre-release screening of Miramax's new film The Heart of the Game will be held Wednesday, June 7, 2006 at 7 p.m. in University Crossings Screening Room 028 (3175 JFK Boulevard).
The Heart of the Game is a new documentary showing that there is much more to being part of a team than just winning games. This moving story follows six years in the life of Seattle's Roosevelt High School girls' basketball team, their inspirational coach, and one player's journey from outsider to teammate.
Documentary filmmaker Ward Serrill found a winning subject in Bill Resler, a college professor who moonlights coaching girls' basketball with Roosevelt High School's Roughriders. The lead character, Darnellia Russell, is a tough, inner-city girl with WNBA potential whose off-court struggles threaten her athletic aspirations. The Heart of the Game chronicles real-life events, as well as real-life struggle, heartbreak and joy.
The Heart of the Game is enjoying a successful run on the festival circuit with screenings in Silverdocs: AFI/Discovery Channel Documentary Festival and the San Francisco, Toronto and Tribeca Film Festivals. It will be released soon to theaters. A panel discussion and reception will follow the screening. This event is sponsored by the department of athletics and the Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design.
Department of Architecture Presents: The Fairmount Water Works
- A Lecture with David Hollenberg, AIA & Ed Grusheski
- Saturday, June 3, 2006 at 7:00 PM
Stein Auditorium, 111 Nesbitt Hall, 33rd and Market Sts.
As part of ARCC/EAAE 2006, International Conference on Architectural Research hosted by Temple University, the Department of Architecture will sponsor a public lecture on the Fairmount Water Works, its history, preservation and adaptive reuse. Arguably the most significant building complex of 19th century Philadelphia, the Fairmount Water Works provided to this city the first system of domestic water service since ancient Rome as a municipal responsibility. The engineering innovations and the architectural expression of this complex attracted 19th century tourists from all over the world. The history of water supply to the city of Philadelphia, the use, and reuse of these structures, and the role of ecology in urban planning places this story at the center of 19th and 20th century urban history.
David Hollenberg, AIA, recently appointed the University Architect of the University of Pennsylvania, has been an active participant in the preservation of Philadelphia landmarks. He has worked for the National Park Service, and previously at John Milner Architects. In this later capacity he was involved with the first efforts to restore and reuse the Water Works. Ed Grusheski serves as General Manager, Public Affairs, for the City of Philadelphia Water Department. He began his career in the Water Department in 1988 as the Director and developer of the Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center where he continues to bring the Water Works, and the story of water in Philadelphia to life for tourists, school children and professionals alike.
** This Lecture is worth 1 AIA /CES Learning Unit.

Digital Media Student Film Captures First Place in an Important International Competition
Blight, a Digital Media student-produced short film, has earned first place in the Visual Effects division of the SIGGRAPH Education Committee S.P.A.C.E.?Time Competition. SIGGRAPH is part of the Association of Computing Machinery, an organization that promotes the dissemination of everything related to computer graphics and interactivity. Their annual conference brings together hundreds of creative researchers, award-winning producers, provocative artists, energetic executives and adventurous engineers from the world?s community of digital innovators. The students will receive their award during this year?s conference, which will be held in Boston from July 30th ? August 1st.
Blight tells the story of a mysterious figure slipping through the streets of a gothic-era European town. This figure sometimes appears as a sinister human-like form draped in cloth and acts as a thief in the night, quickly, quietly, and methodically extinguishing the lights of the city. Fix it in Post was able to create a system for generating the entire city from modular building pieces, allowing them to focus on storytelling and achieving the desired visual effects within the short time frame. High-end 3D animation software was used to achieve many subtle effects such as flame, smoke, water, and cloth.
This piece was a group project for an Advanced Animation and Visual Effects course taught by Chris Redmann. The first cut was conceptualized and produced in ten weeks as their final project for the course. Over the following term, the piece was cleaned up, authored to DVD, and a new ending was added by the team?s director, digital media student Seth Kendall. Digital Media Students Patrick Kemp, Russell Falk, Andrew Michael, and Joel Catalan also worked on this film. Congratulations!

Message from Dean Allen Sabinson
The new school term is off and running and we're excited. We have our largest and most gifted freshman class ever and we're meeting the onrush with many talented new faculty members.
We have an impressive slate of upcoming performances, exhibitions and lectures that augment what we teach in the classroom. Almost all are open to the Drexel family. New Paradise Laboratories is in residency with our Mandell Professional In Residence Project. Their new play BATCH: AN AMERICAN BACHELOR/BACHELORETTE PARTY IN SIX ROUNDS will be performed at the Mandell Theater from October 19th through the 22nd and will then be presented at the prestigious Humana Festival. The Drexel Players upcoming season is also an ambitious one. Their slate includes THE LARAMIE PROJECT, an important and moving play, and the very fun THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW.
Actress, singer and storyteller Anita Singleton-Prather will be our Rankin Scholar in Residence on October 17 and 18th. She'll be presenting a series of workshops and performances on the unique Gullah music and culture from the Sea Islands of South Carolina. Acclaimed independent filmmaker Philip Haas will also be a Rankin Scholar in Residence for the entire week of October 30th. Philip's films include ANGELS AND INSECTS (Kirstin Scott Thomas), MUSIC OF CHANCE (James Spader) and UP AT THE VILLA (Sean Penn) and his documentaries have featured artists David Hockney and Richard Long.
An evening with Scott McCloud, part of the Sibby Merkel Brasler Lecture Series, will be a fun night on November 30th. McCloud's latest book UNDERSTANDING COMICS explores the singular magic that occurs when words combine with pictures in the form of comics. Matt Groenig, creator of the SIMPSONS, says ‘If you've ever felt bad about wasting your life reading comics, then check out Scott McCloud's classic book immediately. You might still feel you've wasted your life, but you'll know why, and you'll be proud.”
I could go on and on about the performances of our numerous music and dance ensembles, upcoming exhibitions at the Pearlstein Gallery, our amazing senior shows, and other lectures and symposia, but I don't want you to feel as if this is a homework assignment. Suffice it to say, we hope you -- our students, faculty, staff, alumni, friends and supporters – will avail yourself of some of these exciting doings which we'll tell you more about in upcoming editions of this newsletter.
Our already fine faculty has been strengthened with the addition of photographer Andrea Modica; artists Francoise Dureese, Sarah Steinwachs and Lee Arnold; Dr. Myron Moss, Program Director for Music; graphic artist Shushi Yoshinaga; filmmakers Zhenya Kiperman and Dave Schwartz; Cynthia Golembuski in Fashion Design; Karen Peltzer in Interior Design; Nick Cassaway in Design and Merchandising; as well as Dr. Jeff Nimeroff, a joint appointment in our Digital Media program and the College of Engineering.
I think it's safe to say that the Westphal College is as strong as it's ever been and we appreciate your support and the strong support we've received from the University.
Westphal College Welcomes Theater Company New Paradise Laboratories as Mandell Professionals-in-Residence
Drexel University's Department of Performing Arts kicks off the 2nd year of the Mandell Professionals-in-Residence Project with the groundbreaking and award winning theater company New Paradise Laboratories. New Paradise Laboratories will be in residence at Drexel's Mandell Theater from September 26 – October 22, 2006.
New Paradise Laboratories creates shocking, humorous, spiritual, physical and distinctive experimental theatre productions that investigate physical expression, on-stage and in life. Founded in 1996 by Artistic Director Whit MacLaughlin and a company of seven actors, the company has made Philadelphia its home since 1998. During that time, New Paradise Laboratories has created nine world premieres and three Philadelphia Fringe Festival “Spotlight” commissions which have garnered the company an OBIE award, a Barrymore award, and a Pew Charitable Trusts Fellowship in Performance Art.
The Mandell Professionals in Residence Project (MPiRP) brings both renowned and emerging artists to Drexel University to work with students and faculty in curricular and extra-curricular settings. It offers a unique educational resource to the faculty, students and staff at Drexel. Guest artists and professionals from the theater and dance industries will join the department for residencies and workshops throughout the year. Guest artists lecture, lead workshops, teach master classes, and create and present productions.
