An Exhibition of Souvenir Buildings from the Collections of Architecture Faculty

  • Through August 19
  • The Rincliffe Gallery
  • Main Building, third floor
  • 32nd Street and Chestnut Street
Exhbition of Souvenir Buildings thumbnail

Miniature souvenir buildings have been a feature at tourist sites for more than a hundred years, expanding in popularity with the rise of popular tourism in Europe. In recent years there has been a boom in collecting these little buildings in the United States. Souvenir Buildings have been made in a variety of materials, but are usually cast in metal, mirroring the original in great detail. When seen collectively, souvenir buildings offer a fascinating commentary on the history of architecture, and a barometer of popular appreciation of architectural monuments. The Souvenir Building Collectors Society held its annual convention in Philadelphia in late June. The collections of three Drexel Architecture faculty members - Paul Hirshorn, John Blatteau and Charles Evers - are being displayed in the Rincliffe Gallery in conjunction with this convention.

Rosita

Rosita: A documentary by Barbara Attie and Janet Goldwater
  • Thursday, October 6, 2005 at 7PM
  • Large Screening Room
  • University Crossings
  • 15 North 32nd Street

Philadelphia documentarians Barbara Attie and Janet Goldwater's heartbreaking true story of a 9-year old Nicaraguan girl who was raped and impregnated but whose unwanted pregnancy became a political football between abortion rights and antiabortion forces.

The medical establishment were deeply concerned that 9 year old Rosita's life would be in danger if she carried to term, but the Church and the governments of Nicaragua and Costa Rica intervene in direct contradiction to Rosita's parents' wishes for a medical abortion. After women's health groups help Rosita win a landmark court victory for victims of sexual abuse, the Catholic Church excommunicates Rosita and her parents, setting off a wave of public outrage.

With its even-handed and compassionate look at issues of women's rights, medical ethics, and the roles of church and state, the film resonates with the recent headline-grabbing battle fought over the fate of Terry Schiavo.

Attie and Goldwater will speak about the making of the film and the issues involved.

These Philadelphia filmmakers work includes MAGGIE GROWLS about gray panther activist Maggie Kuhn which aired on PBS and I WITNESS: Shot Down in Pensacola about violence against abortion clinics. They are 2005 winners of a Pew Fellowship in the Arts.

The screening is free, but space is limited. Reserve your seats by calling 215-895-0352 or e-mailing rsvp.rudman@drexel.edu for this event which is presented by the Kal & Lucille Rudman Institute for Entertainment Industry Studies.

Westphal College Faculty Member, Joseph Hancock, Quoted in MSU Newspaper

Joseph H. Hancocke

Joseph Hancock, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Design and Merchandising, was interviewed for an article entitled "Sticking to the Issues" which ran in Michigan State University's student newspaper The State News on October 20th. The article is focused on MSU's stage production of Hairspray, originally a movie by John Waters, in which an unlikely star is born in the form of the character, Tracy Turnblad - an overweight 'hair-hopper' from Baltimore who becomes the starlet of a local dance show (think American Bandstand). Although the overt tone of Hairspray is comedic, the characters all struggle with racism, weight and social class. Mr. Hancock's quote and the article in its entirety can be viewed at: www.statenews.com

Rudman Institute Presents Free Screening of The Beast of War

The Beast of War

Free Screening followed by Q&A with the Screenwriter

  • Wednesday, November 2 @ 7pm
  • Screening Room 028
  • University Crossings
  • 15 North 32nd Street
  •
  • For reservations call 215-895-0352 or RSVP online

Noted screenwriter and playwright William Mastrosimone's THE BEAST OF WAR was a film ahead of its time and is something of a lost classic. The movie tells the story of a Soviet tank crew lost behind enemy lines during the war in Afghanistan.

Set in 1981, Afghan Mujahadeen set out to destroy a lone Russian tank and its crew after the Russians' vicious attack on a local village. The film stars Jason Patric, Stephen Baldwin and George Dzundza, and was directed by Kevin Reynolds (ROBIN HOOD: PRINCE OF THIEVES).

This is a superior war movie that portrays all sides of the conflict with complexity and compassion. The film was produced during the tenure of Sir David Puttnam as the head of Columbia Pictures. Puttnam was vocal about his intentions to produce more ambitious movies that tackled social and political issues rather than most Hollywood fare which he saw as exploitative. A movie about a foreign conflict set in a distant land would never have been an easy sell to audiences and when Puttnam's short tenure came to an end, his successors 'dumped' the film.

In light of the United States' involvement in Afghanistan and Iraq, THE BEAST OF WAR is even more relevant today and the film holds up well as a tense action film and as an examination of the horrors of war. Mastrosimone's work includes the script and play of EXTREMITIES; the critically acclaimed BURNING SEASON, an HBO film on the destruction of the Amazon rain forest; and TNT's recent Steven Spielberg produced mini-series INTO THE WEST. His play THE AFGHAN WOMEN will be presented on Broadway in 2006. The author lives in the Delaware Valley.

This event is presented by the Kal & Lucille Rudman Institute for Entertainment Industry Studies.
