Product Design Faculty: Tenure Track

Posting Summary: DREXEL UNIVERSITY invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position for a Product Designer/Industrial Designer at the rank of Assistant/ Associate Professor.

The ideal candidate will provide a leadership role in the development of a new Product Design Program and will develop curricula to support this interdisciplinary initiative within the Westphal College of Media Arts & Design. The candidate may ultimately provide administrative services as Program Director for a new Product Design major. Product Design curricula should provide a solid foundation in the design, marketing, and production of innovative manufactured goods with a strong emphasis on sophisticated contemporary design and visual arts aesthetics.

Qualifications: Applicants should have a Masters degree or PhD in Industrial/Product Design and be expert in current professional practices with a demonstrated track record of nationally recognized professional achievement. Candidates should have expert knowledge of relevant digital media, a solid background in design history, and comprehensive understanding of critical thinking and problem solving in the design arts. The successful candidate should also possess a commitment to interdisciplinary work, a collaborative spirit, and the ability to work effectively with faculty, staff and students. Previous teaching experience at the undergraduate or graduate level is required.

Responsibilities: The successful candidate will be able to work closely with the faculty of our Architecture, Design and Merchandising, Graphic Design, Interior Design and Fashion Design programs as well as colleagues from the Colleges of Business and Engineering. The applicant will be required to teach existing and/or new coursework for our design curriculum until the new Product Design major has been implemented. Additional responsibilities include student advising, committee work, service to the department, and continued development in the area of expertise through funded research, scholarly publication or professional practice.
