Curator of Historic Costume Collection
DESCRPTION: Drexel University seeks a full time curator to manage its historic costume collection of over 7000 objects. The position is a 12-month, non-tenure track contract. Responsibilities include overall collection management and development, grant writing, donor relations, conservation strategy development, twelve credit hours of teaching per year (one course per quarter), exhibitions, and university/community-wide collaboration and outreach. The position will include a full benefits package. Salary is commensurate with experience.
The Drexel Historic Costume Collection is located in Drexel University’s Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design in Philadelphia. It is a teaching Collection that includes over 200 years of historic costumes. Included are examples from most of the significant designers of the 19th and 20th century as well as many pieces where the provenance is not known but the pieces are valued for their design and textiles. The Collection is comprised of evening and day wear, millinery, lingerie, accessories and a fine collection of lace. It can be viewed online at http://digimuse.cis.drexel.edu.
REQUIREMENT: Advanced degree in costume history, preferably with a concentration in 19th or 20th centuries; demonstrated track record in grant writing; minimum five years curatorial experience (an internship in full time museum work is acceptable as part of this requirement).
The successful candidate will be collegial, energetic and flexible in handling the wide variety of duties. Within the context of the University’s commitment to technology, familiarity with electronic museum management databases and the evolving professional standards for electronic archiving, digital imaging and copyright infringement is strongly recommended.
