Rome 2009
Architecture Tour in Rome
The Department of Architecture & Interiors will offer the Summer Study Tour Abroad in Rome (ARCH 347, Section 701) in Summer 2009.
Introductory lectures and reading in Philadelphia will be followed by three weeks intensive touring in Rome. The final six weeks of the quarter will be devoted to preparing a paper which summarizes the observations made during the tour.
The Summer Study Tour Abroad is worth 6 credits. The course satisfies the History/Theory or Professional Elective categories in the architectural curriculum.
The course is scheduled in the Summer Quarter 2009. The Rome portion of the course will be scheduled for three weeks in late June, early July 2009. A group flight will be arranged to guarantee flight availability in the busy travel season with every effort made to reach the lowest possible fares. The lowest fare will be subject to airline group flight rules which do not allow for extended stays.
Rooms will be reserved for participants in a pensione conveniently located in central Rome within walking distance of many important buildings and ancient sites. Estimated prices are based on double or triple occupancy.
The course is open to all students in the Westphal College of Media Arts & Design who meet the following prerequisites: ARCH 141-143, Architecture, and Society I, II, & III, and Studios through ARCH 243, Studio 4-3, or their equivalents.
The following estimated costs will serve as a planning guide:

Students wishing to participate in the Summer Study Tour should submit the application form to the Department Head. Applicants will be notified about selection in March 2009. Enrollment is limited. If candidates exceed the number of available places selection will depend on major (Architecture majors have priority), seniority (expected graduation date), and grade point average in that order. The course is scheduled in the Summer Quarter 2009. The Paris portion of the course has been tentatively scheduled for Friday, July 6, 2009 to Saturday, July 28, 2009. A group flight will be arranged to guarantee flight availability in the busy travel season with every effort made to reach the lowest possible fares. The lowest fare will be subject to airline group flight rules which do not allow for extended stays. Rooms will be reserved for participants in a youth hotel located in central Paris convenient to public transportation. Estimated prices are based on double occupancy, plus breakfast.

The Otto Sperr Traveling Scholarship
The Department of Architecture invites matriculated architecture students to apply for the Otto Sperr Traveling Scholarship. The Scholarship will be awarded to one promising and deserving matriculated architectural student to support their participation in either of the Summer Study Tours to Rome or Paris this summer. Professor Otto Sperr, a dedicated member of our faculty, died in November 1998. He was both a skillful practitioner and a thoughtful and scholarly professor who was able to offer courses on any aspect of architectural practice. Over 26 years of service Professor Sperr taught studios and thesis, as well as courses in programming and architectural theory. In memory of Otto Sperr's deep commitment to architecture and his extraordinary teaching at Drexel University the Sperr family created a traveling fellowship in his memory, along with the support of his friends and colleagues.
The Otto Sperr Scholarship is open to matriculated students in the Department of Architecture who have registered for one of the Department's Summer Study Tours to Rome or Paris. Applicants must submit the following:
  • A Statement of Purpose: The applicant should describe how this scholarship will contribute to their education and development as an architect. This statement should not exceed one typed page.
  • An Evaluation of Financial Need: If the applicant has not already submitted the 2007-08 Free Application for Federal Student Aid as part of normal University financial aid procedures, then they should do so by completing the application online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. If applicants are not applying for other forms of aid they must still complete this form so the Office of Financial Aid can properly evaluate their circumstances.
Deadline for Application: Applications are due at 5:00 PM on Monday, February 11, 2008 in the Department of Architecture Office, 3201 Arch Street.
Criteria for Selection: The Otto Sperr Traveling Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of the applicant's GPA, both overall and in studio, and an evaluation of the applicant's financial need. The Department's Scholarship Committee will evaluate the applications in consultation with the Director of Financial Aid and make the award within two weeks of the deadline for submission.
Amount of Award: The Otto Sperr Traveling Fellowship is estimated to be $1200 for the coming summer.

The Anthony & Louis Marzullo Traveling Scholarship
The Department of Architecture invites matriculated architecture students to apply for the Anthony & Louis Marzullo Traveling Scholarship which will assist one promising and deserving matriculated architectural student to participate in the Summer Study Tour to Rome this summer. This scholarship has been created to honor the memory Anthony & Louis Marzullo whose artistic careers and love of classical art and architecture were an inspiration to their family.
The Marzullo Traveling Scholarship is open to matriculated students in the Department of Architecture who intend to participate in the Department's Summer Study Tour to Rome.
Applicants must submit the following:
  • A Statement of Purpose: The applicant should describe how this scholarship will contribute to their education and development as an architect. This statement should not exceed one page.

The William Steele & Company Scholarship
The Department of Architecture invites matriculated architecture students to apply for the William Steele & Company Traveling Scholarship which will assist one promising and deserving matriculated architectural student to participate in the Summer Study Tour to Rome this summer. This scholarship has been created by Leon Clemmer, President of William Steele & Company, and a 2001 Drexel architecture graduate.
Who May Participate: The Steele Traveling Scholarship is open to matriculated students in the Department of Architecture who intend to participate in the Department's Summer Study Tour to Rome.
Application Procedure: Applicants must submit the following:
