FAQ'S

Q: Is there anyone there that can assist me if I am having problems with a computer or printer?
A: There are Lab Monitors available throughout the day in Nesbitt in the second floor workstudy office. If a workstudy is unable to help you, please report the problem and the D&I staff will be notified via e-mail of the issue.

Q: Are students allowed to stay in the labs after hours?
A: For Graphic Design students you need special permission to stay late in the labs. See requests page for a late list request. For Interior Design students, Room 322 is a 24 hour lab. All other after hour lab rules are determined by the corresponding academic program. For example, Digital Media students have access to Room 014 after hours but not Room 017.

Q: Who is allowed to use the HP DesignJet Plotters?
A: Plotting in Nesbitt Hall is available for Interior Design undergraduate and graduate students only. Plotting is available for non-Interior majors with special permission from the ID department chair only. For plotting prices, see D&I Store/Print Prices.
Architecture manages its own plotters. The plotters located in the Arch Studio are available for full time architecture students. The plotter in the Main Building is available for evening part-time architecture students.

Q: What are the procedures for plotting?
A: First, from the computer you are working on, send your final document ONCE to the appropriate plotter. Depending on how many plots have been sent simultaneously, plotting can be quick or it can take over an hour. Next, contact a work study to retrieve your plot so you can proceed with your purchase. NOTE: YOU MAY NOT PLOT AFTER 9:30 PM.

Q: I need to plot quickly. How can I get a plot printed fast?
A: Plotting takes time and should not be left to the last minute. Plan on giving yourself at least one hour to retrieve a plot. If you think that your print job has not been processed, please DO NOT resend the job to the plotter; contact a work study or a D&I staff member before resending the print job to the plotter.

Q: Are we allowed to use our own paper in the printers?
A: You must first get your paper approved by one of the Studio directors.

Q: Can I buy disks at the Design and Imaging Studio?
A: Yes. We sell Zip Disks, DVD's, CD-R's and CD-RW's. See price list on this site.

Q: Where can we scan images?
A: There are scanners located in each of the labs. Various types of scanners have been purchased by individual departments. The type of scanner that should be used depends on what is being scanned. Please contact your instructor to be advised on scanner choices and scanning techniques.

Q: What programs are on the PC's and Macs?
A: Each academic program has a unique set of software that is installed on lab computers. For a comprehensive list of software available in each program, see the Equipment page.

Q: How can I become a D&I work study employee?
A: First you must find out if your financial aid package includes a work study component. Next, sign up online and a D&I staff member will contact you about a position.

Saving Work

Always save work to your own personal storage device. However, we strongly encourage students to back up their work on the available student storage servers or drives. DO NOT save any work to the local system drive on ANY lab computer. NOTE: ALL WORK STORED ON STUDENT STORAGE WILL BE DELETED AT THE END OF EVERY TERM. Occasionally, servers go down due to unexpected power failure or technical problems, therefore your first storage location should be your personal drive or device.
