Carlsbad, New Mexico

Roxanne Lara Eddy County Commission Chairwoman Roxanne “Rocky” Lara believes that there is strength in numbers and has put that belief into action by forming coalitions to address issues in her community.  Lara represents an energy-rich part of New Mexico and always strives to balance the preservation of the environment with the needs of sustainable, economic-based high paying industries.  This balance continues the unique traditions of Eddy County, which is home to the world-renowned Carlsbad Caverns National Park, and two state parks; as well as the home of the largest oil and gas producing area in New Mexico plus  innovative potash mining and the United States only deep geologic nuclear waste repository.  During her time on the Commission, Eddy County has enjoyed one of the lowest unemployment rates in the nation and has ended each year with a fiscal surplus, without raising any taxes. Lara serves as Secretary for Energy Communities Alliance (ECA), a national organization of energy communities and also as a representative on the Eddy County-Lea County Energy Alliance.

While Lara has dedicated substantial time to working on energy and economic development issues, her true passion is her work for woman’s equality.  In her work with Vision 2020, AAUW and other organizations, Lara advocates for and establishes programs to raise levels of women in leadership, achieve pay equity and reinforce the importance of the woman’s vote.  A long-time community leader, Lara additionally serves the Mayor of Carlsbad as the Co-Chairman of his Long-Range Planning Committee and a member of his Nuclear Task Force.   Lara is a Past Chairman of the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce and Past Chairman of the Eddy County DWI Council, in addition to having held leadership roles on many local and regional boards.

Lara founded Lara Law Firm and has a history of representing children, particularly in abuse and neglect situations, and private citizens and businesses in a varied practice.  Lara is married to Manuel “Leo” Lara and they spend their time promoting and enjoying the many amenities of Eddy County.
