Jan Michelsen is a shareholder in the Indianapolis office of Ogletree Deakins Nash Smoak & Stewart and concentrates her practice in counseling and defending management in various labor and employment law matters in federal and state courts and before regulatory agencies. Jan has written and lectured extensively on labor and employment law topics to provide practical advice to help human resources professionals and in-house attorneys manage their workforces and avoid litigation.
Jan received her J.D., summa cum laude, at Indiana University School of Law in1994 where she served as Editor-in-Chief of the Indiana Law Review and was ranked first in her graduating class. She also received an MBA in Marketing, summa cum laude, from Kelley School of Business at Indiana University, and a B.S., in Journalism, summa cum laude, from Bradley University. Jan is ranked “AV” by Martindale-Hubbell legal directory, the highest rating possible for her legal ability and ethical standards. Jan has long been active in the American Inns of Court movement, a professional organization of lawyers and judges committed to civility and excellence, as a member of the AIC Foundation Board of Trustees and as a Barrister in both the Sagamore and Indianapolis Inns of Court. She recently was inducted as a Fellow in the Litigation Counsel of America. She also serves on the Board of Directors of the Madame Walker Theatre Center, was a Charter Member of the Women’s MBA Advisory Committee, Kelley School of Business; received a Diversity Leadership Academy of Indianapolis Fellowship; and was a Pegasus Scholar of the Honourable Society of The Inner Temple in London, England. Prior to her legal career, Jan directed communications, strategic planning, and marketing functions as Director of Business Development at Indiana University Medical Center.
