Dr. Erik Benrud
clinical professor of finance at LCoB, presented the paper “The Option Listing Effect and Deposit­ary Receipts: Is it Different from that of Domestic Stocks?” at the 2009 Financial Management Association Meetings in Reno, Nev. He authored a book chapter, “The History and Evolution of Dividends,” which ap­pears in Dividends and Dividend Policy. Benrud chaired a panel on “Asset Allocation in a World on Different Recovery Paths“ at the Asset Allocation Forum in Alternatives 2009 held at the Harvard Club in New York.

Judith Bing
associate professor of architecture at AWCoMAD, presented “Dwelling Type and Variation in the Balkans: Effects of religion on house form and culture,” as part of the interdisciplinary workshop “About That Other Middle East (the non-Muslim one)” at the 2009 CSU Conference on Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies at San Francisco State University.

Denise Dillon
head coach of the women’s basketball team, recorded her 100th career coaching victory on December 13, 2009 with a 71-69 win over Philadelphia rival Saint Joseph’s University.

Dr. Robert D’Ovidio
assistant professor of culture and communication at CoAS, presented the paper “Hiding Crimes in Cyberspace: Crime & Victimization in Public-Access Internet Facilities” at the American Society of Criminology conference in Philadelphia. The paper was co-authored by Dr. Murugan Anandarajan, professor of management at LCoB, and Irv Schlanger, assistant teaching professor of computing and security technology at GC.

Dr. Eugenia Victoria Ellis
associate professor of interior design at AWCoMAD, presented “Architectures of Well-Being: Photobiology, Biomimicry and Biophilia” at Design on the Delaware’s Annual Conference for the Philadelphia Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.

Dr. Ellen Feld
clinical associate professor in the Physi­cian Assistant program at CNHP, published the essay “Advice” in the “On Being A Doctor” section of An­nals of Internal Medicine (vol. 152, no. 1, pp.62).

Dr. Bakhtier Farouk
J. Harland Billings Professor of Mechanical Engineering at COE, was the mechanical engineering program evaluator for the ABET/EAC team that visited the various engineering programs at the American University of Beirut (Lebanon).

Annie Fetter
Math Forum @ Drexel educational programs leader, Max Ray, Math Forum @ Drexel professional collaboration facilitator, and Suzanne Alejandre, Math Forum @ Drexel director of professional development, facilitated a workshop on the Problem Solving and Communication Activity Series from the Math Forum’s Problems of the Week program as part of the Delaware Middle School Math Inter­vention Series. Fetter is working with teachers at Lindenwold (N.J.) Middle School in conjunction with an Implementing New Curricular Learning with Uni­versally Designed Experiences (INCLUDE) grant.

Dr. Jacqueline Garner
associate professor of finance at LCoB, was appointed associate editor of Financial Re­view. Garner and Won Yong Kim, finance doctoral student at LCoB, presented the paper “Are foreign inves­tors really beneficial? Evidence from South Korea,” at the Journal of Corporate Finance “Conference on Corporate Governance and Emerging Markets,” held in Beijing, China, and the fourth annual “Conference on Asia-Pacific Financial Markets” in Seoul, South Korea.

Dr. Yury Gogotsi
Trustee Chair Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at CoE, and a colleague had the review article “Materials for Electrochemical Supercap­acitors,” which originally appeared in Nature Materials in November 2008, selected as one of 35 review articles published in the book Nanoscience and Technology.

Bruce Graham
instructor of screenwriting and playwriting at AWCoMAD, won seven Barrymore Awards for his play Something Intangible. The Barrymore awards are Phil­a­delphia’s most prestigious theater awards.

Dr. Mary Jo Grdina
associate clinical professor at SoE, and Dr. Michel L. Miller, assistant professor at SoE, presented “Physics at the Art Museum” at the National Science Teachers Association, Region Con­ference, in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

Dr. Dominic F. Gullo
professor of teacher education at SoE, presented the papers “Assessment Challenges in the Full-day Kindergarten” and “More than a 30-minute Sitcom: Integrating Content and Extending Activities in Kindergarten,” at the National Association for the Edu­cation of Young Children Annual Conference held in Washington, D.C.

Lisa Hayes
instructor of fashion design at AWCoMAD, presented the paper “A Green Approach to Design: Inte­gration of Sustainable Textile Sourcing and Garment Design in Fashion Studio Coursework” at the 2009 Inter­national Textile and Apparel Association conference in Seattle. Her sustainable design “The Little Green Dress Project: Look One” was shown in a juried show for professional members in the “Target Market” at the conference. Hayes published the paper “Fashion Now: Col­laboration & Interaction” in the International Costume Con­­ference book Benefits and Limitations of Environ­mentally Friendly Leather and Its application in Clothing Design. Hayes had her “Little Green Dress Project: Fall 2009” shown in the 2009 International Fashion Exhibition sponsored by The Korea & China Asso­ciation of Fashion Industry Academy.

Dr. James D. Herbert
professor of psychology and associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, was invited to be a Fellow of the Institute for Science in Medicine.

Dr. Gregory Hislop
associate professor at CoIST, and Dr. Lee Leitner, associate teaching professor at CoIST, presented the paper “Creating a New Introductory Course Sequence for BSIT Students” at the ACM SIGITE conference in Fairfax, Va.

Lauren Jablonowski
an undergraduate at BIOMED and member of Delta Phi Epsilon, was a contestant on the January 18, 2010 episode of Wheel of Fortune.

Theodore Katerinakis
culture and communication doctoral student at CoAS, contributed details about his research on banking ethics in Greece in the Quarterly Edition of Business File (Greece and Britain).

Ann Keith Kennedy
AWCoMAD librarian, and Dr. Joe Hancock, assistant professor of design and merchandising, presented “The Importance of Academic Re­search: Creating an Online Journal” at the International Textiles and Apparel Association’s 2009 annual meeting. Hancock was nominated to be the International Textiles and Apparel Association’s vice president of operations and will be the conference chair for the 2011 annual meeting. Hancock was also the recipient of the Costume Society of America’s Travel Research Grant, which he will use to conduct research at New York University’s Fales Rare Library Archives for his new book Icons of Contemporary Fashion & Style.

Dr. Miriam N. Kotzin
associate professor of English and philosophy at CoAS, chaired a session at the Edgar Allen Poe Bicentennial Conference in Philadelphia. She had three of her stories translated into Polish by Piotr Siwecki and published in Minimal Books.

Dr. John Kounios
professor of psychology at CoAS, was awarded Fellow status by the Association for Psych­ological Science.

Dr. Werner Krandick
associate professor of computer science at CoE, presented “On a root bound asserted by Lagrange” at the seminar “Computer-Assisted Proofs—Tools, Methods and Applications,” held in Schloss Dagstuhl, Germany.

Dr. Brad Layton
assistant professor of mechanical engineering and mechanics at CoE, and MEM students will travel to Connecticut to compete in the May 2010 ASME Human Powered Vehicle Competition for the competition at Central Connecticut State University.

Dr. Frank Lee
assistant professor of computer science at CoE, presented on Drexel’s gaming curriculum and game research at the Department of Broadcasting Telecommunications and Mass Media in the School of Communications and Theater at Temple University, to discuss in detail the gaming curriculum and game research at Drexel University. Lee will use this opportunity to explore potential curricular collaboration in gaming between BTMM and Drexel’s CS Department.

Dr. Joseph Lema
assistant professor of hospitality management at GC, presented “Workforce development in the Balkans: Optimizing human resources” as an invited speaker at the Eastern European Gaming Summit held at the Inter Expo and Congress Center, in Sofia, Bulgaria.

Dr. Ben Lev
professor and head of the Decision Sciences Department at LCoB, was the program committee chair of the Third Annual Conference of the International Society of Management Science and Engineering Management held in Bangkok, Thailand.

Dr. Christopher Li
associate professor of materials science and engineering at CoE, published the invited “View­point” article “Polymer Single Crystal Meets Nan­o­­­particles” in Journal of Polymer Science Part B: Polymer Physics. A research image by Li’s group also appears on the cover of this issue.

Dr. Xia Lin
associate professor at CoIST, and Wei Ding, adjunct instructor at CoIST, co-authored the book Information Architecture: The Design and Integration of Information Spaces (Morgan & Claypool, 2009). Lin presented the paper “Evaluating the metadata quality of the IPL”at the ASIST annual conference in Vancouver, British Columbia (co-authored with CoIST doctoral students Shanshan Ma and Caimei Lu, and digital collections manager Mike Galloway). Lin also had two posters presented at ASIST.

Dr. Brent Luvaas
assistant professor, department of culture and communication, CoAS, had a review essay, “Review Essay: Modern Cacophonies. Jeremy Wallach, Modern Noise, Fluid Genres Popular Music in Indonesia, 1997–2001 and Emma Baulch, Making Scenes: Reggae, Punk, and Death Metal in 1990s Bali,” published in the journal Indonesia, 88 (October 2009): 175-183.

Dr. Bruce D. McCullough
professor of decision sciences at LCoB, authored the chapter “Testing Econometric Software,” in Handbook of Econometrics, Volume 2 (Palgrave, 2009). He also authored the chapter “The Accuracy of Econometric Software” in Handbook of Computational Econo­met­rics (Wiley, 2009).

associate professor at EMSoL, was a contestant on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire on January 4.

Claire Mead
project manager for the Math Forum @ Drexel, and a colleague presented a session on “Using Rich Problems to Reach All Learners” at the NCTM Regional Conference in Boston.

assistant professor at SoE, and colleagues presented “New Special Education Admin­istrators: From Needing to Leading” at Council of Administrators of Special Education 20th Annual Fall Conference, held in San Diego.

Andrea Modica
associate professor of photography at AWCoMAD, was part of a group show of artists’ books in Turin, Italy. A retrospective of her work “Flights of the Soul” opened at the Museum of Photographic Arts in Tampa, Fla.

Dr. Alisa Morss Clyne
P.C. Chou Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at CoE, Dr. Gary Friedman, professor of electrical engineering at CoE, and Dr. Alex Fridman, John A. Nyheim Chair Professor of Mech­anical Engineering at CoE, and Dr. Sameer Kalghatgi, electrical engineering graduate student at CoE, published the paper, “Low dose non-thermal plasma treatment enhances endothelial cell proliferation through FGF-2 release” in Annals of Biomedical Engineering.

David Myers
AWCoMAD digital media student, and Girish Balakrishnan, AWCoMAD, digital media student, gave a demonstration of the 3D scanning techniques they used this summer in scanning 18th and 19th century ceramic artifacts recovered from an archeological site of the National Constitution Center at the Independence National Park Living History Center.

assistant professor of culture and communication at CoAS, presented “French Suburbs and The Middle East” at Immaculata University.

Dr. Maria Olivero
assistant professor of economics, had the co-authored paper “Is there a Financial Accel­erator in U.S. Banking? Evidence from the Cyclicality of Banks’ Price-Cost Margins” accepted for publication in Economics Letters.

Dr. Jung-ran Park
assistant professor at CoIST, and Caimei Lu, CoIST doctoral student, published the article “Application of Semi-Automatic Metadata Gener­a­tion: Types, Tools, and Techniques” in Library & Infor­mation Science Research (vol. 31, no. 4).

Dr. Roberto Ramos
assistant professor of physics at CoAS, presented the invited lecture “Really Cool Sci­ence: Artificial Atoms Cooled to Near Absolute Zero Temperatures” at the Science Career event at Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia.

Max Ray
professional collaboration facilitator for the Math Forum @ Drexel, and Suzanne Alejandre, director of professional development for the Math Forum@ Drexel, trained mentors during a Mentors 4 STEM workshop at Temple University. Alejandre and a long-time user of the Math Forum, presented a session “The Math Forum @ Drexel: People Learning Math Together” at CMC-South: The California Mathematics Council’s southern conference, in Palm Springs.

Dr. John A. Rich
professor and chair of the Department of Health Management and Policy at SoPH, presented “Wrong Place, Wrong Time: Understanding Trauma and Violence in the Lives of Young Black Men” at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) as part of the NIH’s Wednesday Afternoon Lecture Series.

Steve Risberg
Internet education specialist for the Math Forum @ Drexel, presented the sessions “Teaching Students to Problem Solve” and “Enhancing Instruction with Technology” at the Delaware County Classrooms for the Future (CFF) Math Collaboration Day.

Stuart Rome
professor of photography at AWCoMAD, and Andrea Modica, associate professor of photography at AWCoMAD, were featured in the group exhibition “8x10 and Under: Small Landscapes” at Phila­delphia’s Gallery 339.

Dr. Warren Rosen
assistant clinical professor of applied engineering technology at GC, presented the co-authored paper “A Novel Technique for Upgrading the Performance of FPGA-based Legacy Processing Sys­tems” at the 28th Digital Avionics Systems Con­ference in Orlando, Fla.

Dr. Elliot Schreiber
executive director of LeBow College of Business Center for Corporate Reputation Management, spoke at a Dilworth Paxson Middle Market Seminar Series event “Developing and Protecting Your Brand—From Business Creation to Market Sensation.”

Dr. Jonathan Seitz
assistant teaching professor of history and politics at CoAS, published the article “’The Root is Hidden and the Material Uncertain: The Challenges of Prosecuting Early Modern Witchcraft” in the journal Renaissance Quarterly. He received a Schmitt grant from the American Historical Association to support his work on European history.

Dr. Wesley Shumar
professor of culture and communication at CoAS, presented the paper “Math Monday at the Math Forum: The Engine of an Online Educational Community of Practice” at the Oxford Ethnography and Education Conference, St. Hilda’s College, Oxford Uni­versity, Oxford, England.

Dr. Scot Silverstein
adjunct instructor at CoIST, is associate editor of the book H.I.T. or Miss: Lessons Learned from Health Information Technology Imple­mentations (American Health Information Manage­ment Asso­ciation, 2009). He presented on “Health IT Promises and Threats” at the annual meeting of the American Asso­ciation of Physicians and Surgeons in Nashville.

Riju Singhal
materials science and engineering doctoral student at CoE (advisor: Dr. Yury Gogotsi, Trustee Chair Professor of Materials Science and Engi­neering), presented the poster “Multifunctional carbon nanopipettes for cellular probing“ at Biotech 2009. The poster was co-authored by Singhal, Gogotsi, Elina Vitol, electrical and computer engineering student, Zulfiya Orynbayeva, research associate at DUCoM, and Dr. Gary Friedman, professor of electrical and computer engineering at CoE.

Paul L. Snyder
computer science doctoral student at CoE, presented the paper “Myconet: A Fungi-inspired Model for Superpeer-based Peer-to-Peer Overlay Topologies” (co-authored by Drs. Rachel Greenstadt, assistant professor of computer science at CoE, and Giuseppe Valetto, assistant professor of computer science at CoE) at the Third IEEE International Con­ference on Self-Adaptive and Self-Organizing Systems held in San Francisco.

Susan Solecki
clinical assistant professor at CNHP, and Drs. Fran Cornelius, associate teaching professor at CNHP, and Kathleen Fisher, associate professor of nursing at CNHP, published “Integrating Clicker Tech­nology at Nursing Conferences: An Innovative Approach to Research Data Collection” in Pro­ceedings: The 3rd International Multi-Conference on Society, Cybernetics and Informatics: IMSCI 2009 (vol. 1). Solecki presented the paper at the Seventh International Conference on Education and Information Systems, Technologies and Applications (EISTA 2009) in Orlando, Fla.

Nasir Uddin
mechanical engineering and mechanics doctoral student at CoE, was awarded a two-year NRC/­NIST Postdoctoral Research Associateships Pro­gram fellowship. He is working on his dissertation, “Atomistic modeling of carbon nanotube dispersion in solvent/surfactant/polymer systems” under advisors Drs. Bakhtier Farouk, J. Harland Billings Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics at CoE, and Franco Capaldi, assistant professor of mechanical engineering and mechanics at CoE, and will begin working at NIST in Gaithersburg, Md., in April.

Dr. Jack Zhou
associate professor of mechanical engineering and mechanics at CoE, Dr. Qingwei Zhang, post doctoral fellow at DUCoM, Dr. Vadym Mochalin, research assistant professor of materials science and engineering at CoE, Dr. Yury Gogotsi, Trustee Chair Professor of Mat­e­ri­als Science and Engineering at CoE, and Dr. Peter Lelkes, Calhoun Chair Professor of Biomedical Engineering, Science and Health Systems at BIOMED, won first place in the Cera­mographic Competition organized by The American Ceramic Society for the poster “Fluorescent Nano­diamond Reinforced PLLA Scaffolds for Tissue Engineering and Bone Repair.”
