Dr. Denise E. Agosto associate professor, Dr. Michael Khoo, assistant professor, and Andrea Japzon, doctoral student, all at CoIST, presented papers for a juried panel, “Values and Information: An Interdisciplinary Examination,” at the American Society for Information Science and Technology 2008 Annual Meeting. Dr. Yuan An assistant professor at CoIST, presented a paper, “Discovering Semantically Similar Associations (SeSA) for Complex Mappings between Conceptual Models,” at the 27th International Conference on Conceptual Modeling. The paper was co-authored by Dr. Il-Yeol Song, professor of IST. Dr. Dennis P. Andrulis associate dean for research and director of the Center for Health Equality at SoPH, and Nadia J. Siddiqui, senior health analyst at the Center for Health Equality, presented “Health Insurance Coverage Reform: Implications for Improving Access in Suburban America” at the Institute of Medicine. Dr. Michel Barsoum A.W. Grosvenor Professor of Materials Science and Engineering, and Dr. Tamer El Raghy ’97, wrote a paper that has exceeded 500 citations. This is the first paper ever from CoE to reach that mark. The paper, “Synthesis and Characterization of a Remarkable Ceramic: Ti3SiC2,” appeared in the July 1996 issue of Journal of the American Ceramic Society. Dr. Maria Benedetto clinical associate professor of physical therapy and rehabilitation sciences at CoNHP, was awarded a Memorial Fund Scholarship from the Section on Pediatrics of the APTA. Dr. Kristen Betts and Dr. Rebecca Clothey, auxiliary assistant professors at SoE, and Lora Furman, assistant director of graduate co-op, operations and program assessment for the Steinbright Career Development Center, presented “Beam Me Up Scotty: Online Graduate Co-op and Professional Development through Simulation” at the 2008 World Association of Cooperative Education Asia Pacific Conference. Dr. Clothey joined the presentation through Second Life and Horizon Wimba. Jen Blazina art and art history professor at WCoMAD, had her work, “Class of 1940,” included in the Kala Institute of Art’s annual exhibition in Berkeley, Calif. Dr. Lisa Bowleg professor at SoPH, was honored on World AIDS Day in December 2008 with a Red Ribbon Award from the Penn Center for AIDS Research’s Community Advisory Board for her research on HIV/AIDS. Dr. Robert J. Chapman clinical associate professor and associate director of the behavioral health counseling undergraduate program at CoNHP, and Dr. Stephen Gambescia, clinical associate professor at CoNHP, had a commentary piece published in The Philadelphia Inquirer. Dr. Fran Cornelius clinical associate professor and coordinator of informatics projects, and Dr. Linda Wilson, assistant professor of nursing, presented “Standards in Healthcare Informatics” at the CHOP Healthcare Informatics Colloquium Session. Dr. Prudence Dalrymple research and teaching professor at CoIST and director of the Institute for Healthcare Informatics, was invited to present “The 17-Year Journey from Research to Practice: Can Informatics Help?” at the Center for Biomedical Informatics Colloquium. Zupenda Davis Zupenda Davis, a doctoral candidate at SoPH, was the 2008 graduate recipient of the Delaware Valley Chapter of the National Association of Health Services Executives Student Scholarship Award. Belinha De Abreu assistant teaching professor at CoIST, completed her advancement to Ph.D. candidacy by successfully defending her dissertation proposal, “The Implementation of a Media Literacy Curriculum in the Public Schools: Three Case Studies.” Dr. David Ebaugh clinical associate professor of physical therapy and rehabilitation sciences at CoNHP, was invited to be an editorial review board member for Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy. Dr. Eugenia Ellis interior design professor, had her essay “City of Dreams: Virtual Space/Public Space” published in the book Writing Urbanism: A Design Reader for the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture. Dr. Yeetey Enuameh a doctoral student at SoPH, recently presented research on the co-morbidities of chronic lymphatic filariasis among patients aged 15 years and older in developing countries at the sixth Joanna Briggs Institute Colloquium, held in association with the 12th International Nursing Research Conference. Dr. Alison A. Evans professor of epidemiology and biostatistics at SoPH, was appointed to a committee at the Institute of Medicine at the National Academies to review the current information on morbidity and mortality due to chronic viral hepatitis in the United States and make recommendations on future research and policy. Dr. Kathleen Kinney Falkenstein assistant professor and track coordinator of the MSN Primary Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Program at CoNHP, was appointed coordinator of the practitioner track in the DrNP program. Dr. Bakhtier Farouk J. Harland Billings Professor of Mechanical Engineering at CoE, presented a paper, “Heat and Mass Transfer in a Differentially Heated Enclosure Filled with Supercritical Carbon Dioxide,” co-authored with Uthai Prasopchingchana and Zhiheng Lei, both graduate students in mechanical engineering and mechanics at CoE, at the 2008 ASME IMECE. Dr. Farouk was also the Mechanical Engineering program evaluator for the ABET/EAC team that evaluated the various engineering programs at Texas A&M University Qatar. He also visited the Engineering College at Qatar University, Doha, Qatar and conducted a seminar on his current research. Dr. David H. Flood professor of health and society at CoNHP, presented “Writing the Wrongs of Healthcare: Medical Thrillers by Medical Authors” at the national conference of the American Association for Bioethics and Humanities. Dr. Arthur L. Frank professor and chair of the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health at SoPH, was recently appointed by the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services to serve on the board of scientific counselors of the National Center for Environmental Health/Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention through 2012. Dennis Gallagher professor at SoPH, delivered the first Sister Helen Owens Public Health Lecture at the Lourdes Center for Public Health at Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center in Camden, N.J. Dr. Kevin Gard clinical associate professor of physical therapy and rehabilitation sciences at CoNHP, was appointed president of Drexel’s chapter of Alpha Eta, a National Allied Health Professions Honor Society that promotes scholarship and recognizes high achievement of health professionals. Dr. Vladimir Genis associate professor and program director for the Applied Engineering Technology Program, presented a paper, “Real-Time Remote Ultrasound Nondestructive Evaluation Laboratory,” at the annual American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) conference. He also was elected to the International Committee of ASNT. Dr. Nancy Gerber clinical associate professor and director of the art therapy program at CoNHP, presented “Mixed Methods Research and Art Therapy” at the annual American Art Therapy Association conference. Dr. Yury Gogotsi professor of materials science and engineering at CoE and director of the Drexel Nanotechnology Institute, has been elected to the rank of Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Dr. John Gould assistant professor of education at SoE, Ke’Anna Brown, technical service coordinator at SoE, and Richard Tchen, webmaster of the Math Forum, represented the forum in the exhibitors’ hall at the annual conference of the Pennsylvania Association of Elementary and Secondary School Principals. Dr. Betty Hartzell assistant professor and assistant director of the art therapy program at CoNHP, presented a workshop, “The Interface of Varied Creative Processes and Clinical Understanding, Focus and Materials,” at the 2008 national American Art Therapy Association conference. Lisa Hayes fashion design professor, presented a paper at the international conference, Sustainability of Textile Fashion Industry Chain: Crop to Shop. Hayes spoke during the “Fashion Materials and Sustainability” session on the subject of recycled sustainable synthetics and their role in the supply chain. William Hesse undergraduate student in mechanical engineering and mechanics at CoE and Hess Honors Scholar, and his advisor, Dr. MinJun Kim, assistant professor of mechanical engineering and mechanics, published a paper, “Visualization of Flagellar Interactions on Bacterial Carpets,” in Journal of Microscopy. One of their cited research figures was selected as the cover image. Dal Hyung Kim and Dave Casale, undergraduates in mechanical engineering and mechanics at CoE, with their advisor Dr. MinJun Kim, assistant professor of mechanical engineering and mechanics, recently traveled to Semmelweis University in Hungary to initiate international collaboration research activities in which they studied the motion of Tetrahymena pyriformis under chemotactic environments. Dr. MinJun Kim assistant professor of mechanical engineering and mechanics, has been selected as a symposium chair for Microfluidics 2009: Fluid Engineering in Micro- and Nanosystems at the 2009 ASME IMECE meeting. Dr. Daniel Kleier senior instructor of chemistry, co-authored a paper, “Comparative Study of Machine-Learning and Chemometric Tools for Analysis of In-Vivo High-Throughput Screening Data,” in Journal of Chemical Information and Modeling. Bryan Kobe undergraduate in electrical and computer engineering at CoE, and R.J. Gross, undergraduate in mechanical engineering and mechanics at CoE, both advised by Dr. Paul Oh, associate professor in mechanical engineering and mechanics at CoE, are currently on a six-month co-op at the Humanoid Lab at the Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, funded by the National Science Foundation. Zhiheng Lei graduate student in mechanical engineering and mechanics at CoE, presented a paper, “Convection and Transport in a Differentially Heated Enclosure Filled with Supercritical Carbon Dioxide: Short- and Long-Time Solutions,”co-authored with Dr. Bakhtier Farouk, J. Harland Billings Professor of Mechanical Engineering at CoE, at the 2008 ASME IMECE. Laurie Lenz academic advisor at BIOMED, and Jill Gugino, University of Delaware, presented “Networking in the Virtual World and Beyond: How to Get Linked into FaceBook and YouTube” to the Middle Atlantic Career Counseling Association. Dr. Longjian Liu associate professor of epidemiology and biostatistics at SoPH, presented “A New Epidemic of Heart Failure in the United States” at a meeting of the American Heart Association. Dr. Daniel Marenda assistant professor of bioscience and biotechnology at CoAS, published “Identification of Novel Regulators of Atonal Expression in the Developing Drosophila Retina” in the December 2008 Genetics. Dr. Jelena Maricic assistant professor of physics at CoAS, presented an invited lecture, “HanoHano: Mobile Neutrino Detectors for Mixing, Masses, Geology, and Remote Reactor Monitoring,” at the Argonne National Laboratory. Kathi Martin professor of fashion design at WCoMAD, presented “A Visualization Tool for Cross-Linking Multiple Classification Hierarchies of Historic Costume” at the Virtual Systems and Multi-Media conference. Dr. Kerry Anne McGeary assistant professor of economics at LCoB, was honored with the Georgesqu-Roegen Prize by the Southern Economic Association for her article, “Will Competitive Bidding Decrease Medicare Prices?” in Southern Economic Journal. The prize is awarded for the best academic article published in the journal. Dr. Vanessa J. Irvin Morris assistant teaching professor at CoIST, was the culminating presenter for the Westchester, N.Y. Library System’s annual Engaging All Kinds of Readers Series, where she presented “Reading as Social Capital: How We Use Text to Engage in the World.” Indraneil Mukherjee and Kerry Drake, doctoral students at CoAS, won the first prize for their poster presentation on “The Synthesis and Thermal Characterization of Poly[(arylenedioxy)(diphenylsilylene)]s for High Temperature Applications” in the Thermal Analysis Forum of Delaware Valley Annual Meeting and Poster Session. Another paper by Mukherjee, chemistry student Sudipto Das, Dr. Solomon P. Samuel and Dr. Yen Wei, professor of chemistry at CoAS, “Effect of Heat Treatment of Filler on the Mechanical Properties of Mesoporous Filler Loaded Experimental Dental Composites,” won third prize in the same conference. Dr. Maggie O’Neil assistant professor of physical therapy and rehabilitation sciences at CoNHP, received this year’s APTA Section on Pediatrics Research Award. Anmiv Prabhu BIOMED graduate student, won the Best Presentation award at the 2009 ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress & Exposition. Prabbu’s presentation, “Synthetic Nanoscale Architectures for Lipoprotein Separation,” was part of the Microfluidics 2008: Fluids Engineering in Micro- and Nano-systems symposium. Debra Ruben professor of architecture and interiors, and Genevieve Dion, director, fashion design program at WCoMAD, were panelists for “Down to Earth—Evolving Design in the 21st Century” at Design Philadelphia 2008. Dr. Doreen Alvarez Saar professor of English and philosophy at CoAS, gave the presidential address to the East Central American Society for 18th Century Studies at its annual conference in Washington, D.C. She has also been reappointed American literature editor on the editorial board of Rocky Mountain Review of Language and Literature. Allen Sabinson dean of WCoMAD, has been appointed to the board of directors of the Wilma Theater. Lisa Schmidt clinical assistant professor of behavioral health counseling at CoNHP, published “Comparison of Service Outcomes of Case Management Teams With and Without a Consumer Provider,” in American Journal of Psychiatric Rehabilitation. Dr. Joanne Farley Serembus clinical associate professor of nursing at CoNHP, presented a poster, “Academic Dishonesty: Utilization of Evidenced-Based Research for Developing Educational Policies,” at the American Association of Colleges of Nursing Baccalaureate Education Conference. Dr. Konstantinos Serfes associate professor of economics at LCoB, presented a paper, “Public Goods and Tax Competition in a Two-sided Model,” at Lehigh University. Dr. Wan Shih associate professor at BIOMED, Dr. Wei-Heng Shih, professor at CoE, and Dr. Zuyan Shen ’06 have been awarded a patent for their technology “Piezoelectric Cantilever Sensors.” Dr. Sorin Siegler professor of mechanical engineering and mechanics at CoE, presented the keynote lecture, “Advances in Image-Based Biomechanics of the Human Foot and Ankle,” at the First International Conference of the Foot and Ankle Biomechanics Society. Ed Steager and U Kei Cheang, graduate students in mechanical engineering and mechanics, along with their advisor, Dr. MinJun Kim, assistant professor of mechanical engineering and mechanics at CoE, and in collaboration with the GRASP laboratory at the University of Pennsylvania, have published a paper, “Harnessing Bacterial Power for Microscale Manipulation and Locomotion,” in the 2009 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation. Sarah Steinwachs professor of visual arts, at WCoMAD was included in the exhibition “5 x 5 x (5)” at the Torpedo Factory Art Center in Alexandria, Va. Charles Stream Diana D. Smith and Donna Torbeck Reuther, clinical instructors in the physician assistant program at CoNHP, presented “Analysis of Attrition Rates and First Time PANCE Performance Among Graduate/Undergraduate Students of the Drexel Hahnemann PA Program 2002-2006” and “Number and Reasons for Clinical Site Discontinuation at the Drexel Hahnemann PA Program 2002-2006” at the 2008 PAEA Annual Education Forum. Mark Stockton art and art history professor at WCoMAD, had three drawings included in the show You Open So Late, You Close So Early at the Fleisher/Ollman Gallery in Philadelphia and also in The Object Direct at Heskin Contemporary Gallery in New York. His work was used as the cover art for the show’s program. Dr. Wei Sun Albert Soffa Chair Professor of Mechanical Engineering at CoE, was invited to conduct a keynote resentation on Biomanufacturing for Tissue Science and Engineering at the Second International Conference on Biomanufacturing. Dr. Patricia Dunphy Suplee assistant professor and assistant dean of special projects, and Dr. Marcia Gardner, clinical associate professor, recently had an article, “Fostering a Smooth Transition to the Nursing Faculty Role,” accepted for publication by Journal of Continuing Nursing Education. Dr. Suplee and Dr. Vicki Lachman, clinical associate professor at CoNHP, Barbara Siebert and Dr. Katherine Anselmi, clinical assistant professor of nursing at CoNHP, published “Nursing Student Incivility in the Classroom, Clinical Setting and On-line” in Journal of Nursing Law. Dr. Mitra Taheri Hoeganaes Assistant Professor of Metallurgy at CoE, and colleagues at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, Calif., have published their work in the December 2008 issue of Small. Dr. Taheri and colleagues will present three papers at the TMS 2009 Annual Meeting and Exhibition, including one that describes work performed in part by Rane Nolan, a participant in the National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates site DREAM: Drexel Research Experience in Advanced Materials. Dr. James Tangorra assistant professor of mechanical engineering and mechanics at CoE, was selected to deliver the plenary talk at the German Science Foundation Priority Program Conference on Bio-Inspired Fluid Mechanics. His research project on biorobotic fish fins is being used by the German Research Foundation. The biorobotic fins made by Jonah Gottlieb, graduate student in mechanical engineering and mechanics at CoE, and Christopher Esposito, undergraduate student, were presented by George Lauder, Harvard University, at the annual Society of Integrative and Comparative Biology meeting. Blaise Tobia digital media professor at WCoMAD, received a review of his work in Philadelphia Weekly and The Philadelphia Artblog. Tobia’s book, Castle of Eufemio, was reviewed in a recent issue of exposure, the biannual journal of the Society for Photographic Education. Dr. Aydin Tozeren professor and director of integrated bioinformatics at BIOMED, hosted the Greater Philadelphia Bioinformatics Alliance Annual Research Retreat and Poster Competition, held at Drexel. Marcy Rauer Wagman music industry professor at WCoMAD, was appointed to the advisory board of the new “Rock and Roll After School” in Phoenixville, Pa., a program for children 8 to 18 years old that will teach teamwork and music. Dr. Sarah Wenger clinical instructor of physical therapy and rehabilitation sciences at CoNHP, and Ashley Nardi, P-DPT student, submitted Nardi’s final project literature review on injury prevention and dance to the Performing Arts SIG of the Ortho Section of the APTA. Dr. Ruth Wittmann-Price assistant professor of doctoral nursing, and Linda Celia, clinical assistant professor of nursing, co-directors of Hahnemann Nursing Research Council, launched their evidence-based practice leadership program. The program mentors three Hahnemann Hospital nurses through an evidence-based practice project every month to create evidence-based practice nursing leaders throughout the hospital system. Dr. Wittmann-Price was also appointed the coordinator of the educator track in the DrNP program.
