Gabriela Marginean Becomes City`s All-Time Leading Scorer The accolades for senior Gabriela Marginean, a member of Drexel’s women’s basketball team, continued when she was honored as the Philadelphia Sports Writers Association’s 2009 Outstanding Amateur Athlete at a ceremony on February 1. The award recognized Marginean’s performance during the 2008-09 season, when she led the Dragons to their first-ever Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) title and NCAA Tournament appearance and was selected as CAA Player of the Year. Marginean was the first Drexel player ever to earn the award.
When the Dragons defeated Towson University on February 18, Marginean set the Philadelphia Division I women’s basketball all-time career scoring record. A first-half jump-shot put Marginean over the previous record of 2,415 career points, set by Penn’s Diana Caramanico in 2001. She ended the game with 19 points, for a total of 2,428 in her Drexel career. Marginean also had six rebounds in the game, putting her past 900 for her Drexel career. She is the fourth player in Drexel history to pass this mark.
