Women’s Basketball Wins CAA Championship, Tournament

The Drexel women’s basketball team secured the championship in the Colonial Athletic Association regular season, beating host Towson 59-45, and in the CAA Tournament with a 65-58 win over James Madison. The tournament included a 62-41 victory over Old Dominion in the CAA semifinals to end its streak at 17 straight CAA championships. Winning the CAA championship secured a berth for the University in the women’s NCAA tournament.

The Dragons finished the regular season 24-8, with a 16-2 record in conference games and riding a 16-game winning streak. The CAA has recognized the Dragons’ successes by honoring several of its members.

Head coach Denise Dillon was named CAA Coach of the Year for the second time in the past five years and junior forward Gabriela Marginean, who broke Drexel’s single-season scoring record, earned conference Player of the Year honors. Senior guard Andrea Peterson, who suffered a season-ending knee injury in the 2007-08 season, returned to the court and earned the CAA’s prestigious Dean Ehlers Leadership Award and also garnered First Team All-Academic honors. Jasmina Rosseel, the team’s second-leading scorer and most prolific three-point shooter, earned a place on the All-CAA Third Team, and Jennifer Stjärnström, who started all but one game this season, was named to the All-Academic Second Team for the second season in a row.
