Drexel Medical Students Aid St. Christopher’s Toy Drive

More than 150 students, faculty and staff from the Queen Lane Medical Campus raised over $600 for new toys for St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children. The toy drive was initiated by Kerry Caperell, a second year medical student and St. Christopher’s volunteer. Caperell spoke to the first year IFM class before a lecture and sent e-mails to first- and second-year students explaining the overwhelming need to restock the toys in the playrooms at St. Christopher’s, a fact he became aware of during his time spent at the hospital. Caperell’s goal was to receive $1 from every student at Queen Lane.

Money for the toys was raised over a two-week period. Five students then went to the Toys R Us in Wyngate, Pa., who gave them an extra 20 percent off the toys purchased. The students filled six shopping carts during their three-and-a-half hour shopping spree. Toys were delivered to St. Christopher’s on October 29.
