Solving the Problems of Tomorrow

In February, we celebrate the accomplishments and contributions of our engineering students, faculty and alumni during our Engineers Week events. We have achieved many successes within Drexel’s College of Engineering and we recognize our engineers for these accolades as they work to create a better tomorrow.

Solving the problems of the future begins with our students and faculty. Through rigorous research and dedication, Drexel has become a leader in nanotechnology and plasma medicine. The ground-breaking discoveries in these fields promise to create advances ranging from healthcare to consumer products.

Finding solutions is the job of our engineers. A prime example of this is the civil engineering team that has developed a learning bridge laboratory. The team installed more than 100 sensors on the Tacony-Palmyra Bridge to gain real-world experience on how bridges operate. Education is being re-defined through the living laboratory to enhance the students’ understanding of evaluating both the technical and societal impacts of their projects.

The Drexel Green initiative has also become a passion of our engineers. They’ve developed innovative projects to improve environmental concerns. A demonstration has been established that will allow Drexel to reduce energy waste and consumption. Working with multiple partners, Drexel will install the first energy-monitoring system on campus to monitor energy usage and sell back excess power to the public grid.

As we celebrate the novel ideas of our students and faculty, we recognize our leaders at the institution. College of Engineering Dean Selçuk Güçeri was awarded the 2010 Delaware Valley Engineer of the Year. He has led Drexel in program initiatives to promote science and engineering by sponsoring robotic programs for grade school and high school students and he supports over 10 summer programs. Engineers enter Drexel knowing they are in the flagship school for solving tomorrow’s problems.

During our National Engineers Week celebration, we hope you’ll join us in congratulating our engineers as they continue to engineer the future.
