Meeting Student Expectations through Technology
A new academic year has begun, bringing the annual promise of new opportunities. This year, Drexel has enhanced learning with the addition of new faculty members, new programs of study both here and abroad and new technologies to assist our faculty and enhance the learning experience at the University.
Our students are very busy and highly mobile, and they want access to course materials and resources at anytime, from anywhere. They want to be able to review materials and classes online to reinforce their classroom experience. They want to learn in their own ways, with materials that match their learning styles. They expect to access materials and course content with the same technologies they use each day in their personal lives. And they want to multitask.
The University recently completed a number of projects that meet these student expectations. We upgraded our entire wireless network to take advantage of the newest standards in data transfer capacity and speed, and our students can more easily and effectively access online materials and applications using our upgraded Dragon Fly wireless network.
The new DragonDrop application, developed by our own Office of Information Resources and Technology under the leadership of Dr. John Bielec, enables faculty to create video and audio files at their computers, convert the digital files automatically to any media format they specify (such as pdf, mp3, mp4 and others) and publish that content via the Web or through podcasts. For example, students can listen to lectures anywhere. DragonDrop gives faculty the opportunity to quickly and easily create digital learning materials our students can use the way they want, helping them maximize their learning experience.
Drexel’s technological leadership is a major reason we were ranked number 6 among the most innovative national universities according to a U.S.News & World Report survey of our peers. Students come to Drexel in large part because of this leadership, and this year they will not be disappointed.
