The Philadelphia Armory, located on 33rd Street north of Market, officially became part of the University in a signing event and celebration on April 15. Adjutant General Jessica L. Wright of the Pennsylvania National Guard, President Papadakis and board of trustees chair Richard Greenawalt signed a long-term lease agreement that will allow Drexel Athletics use of the historic building, which will eventually become a state-of-the art sports arena and convocation space for the University. President Papadakis, General Wright, Mr. Greenawalt, executive vice president and chief of staff Carl “Tobey” Oxholm III and Rob Falcone, president of the DAC Pack, gave brief remarks before the signing. Renderings of the Armory’s restored façade and renovated interior were on display and Mario the Magnificent, the Drexel cheerleaders and the Pep Band were on-hand to help celebrate the occasion. Five full-time Pennsylvania National Guard commands will continue to work out of the Armory. The National Guard’s recruiting station, headquarters and museum and the University’s ROTC program, Task Force Dragon, will also remain there. The three-floor, 21,346-square-foot structure was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.
The American Cancer Society’s annual “Relay for Life” fundraiser was held on the Drexel campus from Saturday afternon, April 12 through Sunday morning, April 13. It was Drexel’s second year of participation in the national event in which communities come together to celebrate those who have survived cancer, remember those who have been lost and raise money to help combat the disease. The event was originally scheduled to take place outdoors in front of the Daskalakis Athletic Center, but the threat of thunderstorms forced the 38 participating teams into the shelter of the Armory where, under the leadership of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, 314 participants raised $42,292. Drexel student and event chairman Anthony Ambriz reported that was twice their original goal and expressed appreciation for the excellent support from students, faculty and organizations campus-wide.
