"A New Bridge to the Future" Gala a Success

On September 17, Drexel hosted a gala celebration in the Library Galleria to thank Sacramento for the warm welcome we have received. The event, called "A New Bridge to the Future," was attended by more than 300 business, civic, and government leaders, along with 30 Drexel faculty and staff, more than 50 Drexel alumni from the region, and six students who have been admitted to the Inaugural Drexel Class in Sacramento. Two large Drexel Dragons, carved in ice, greeted the guests as they arrived.

The evening was hosted by Drexel's President Dr. Constantine Papadakis and his wife, Eliana, the Sacramento Area Commerce & Trade Organization (SACTO), the Sacramento Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce (Metro Chamber), and by the philanthropists who have offered Drexel 1,100 acres of land in Placer County on which to build a residential undergraduate campus: Angelo and Sofia Tsakopoulos, William and Claudia Cummings, and the Wayne L. Prim family. That offer is under consideration by Drexel.

Carl "Tobey" Oxholm III, executive vice president of the University and director of the Graduate Center, was the master of ceremonies. Remarks were given by Drexel Trustee Renee Amoore (who had spoken from the podium at the Republican National Convention the week earlier), as well as by representatives of the hosts. The evening ended with a champagne toast by President Papadakis to a wonderful future.

Photos from the gala will appear soon on the Graduate Center's website, and look for interviews with some of the students who attended the gala in the next issue of this newsletter.

In the sixth annual ranking of entrepreneurship programs from Entrepreneur Magazine and The Princeton Review, LeBow's graduate program placed eighth. This is the second year in a row that LeBow has placed in the top 10.

"LeBow College of Business has been sharply focused on developing the entrepreneurial mind-set of our student body," said Dr. George P. Congratulations to Our Award-Winning iSchool Faculty

Good news for students interested in Drexel's Information Systems or Library and Information Science programs — they have some of the best faculty in the nation, and we have the recognition to prove it:

      • The American Society for Information Science and Technology recently awarded Dr. Eileen Abels the Thompson ISI Outstanding Information Science Teacher Award for 2008. As director of graduate Programs for the iSchool at Drexel, faculty advisor for the Internet Public Library, and the author of the new book Business Information: Needs and Strategies, Dr. Abels is an invaluable part of the iSchool faculty. Sacramento students can learn from Dr. Abels during her Information Services in Organizations and Digital Reference classes.
  • iSchool faculty aren't just teachers — they're also dedicated researchers in their fields. This was recently confirmed when the Academic Analytics Faculty Scholarly Productivity Index ranked iSchool faculty fourth in the nation for journal publications per faculty member and seventh in the nation for percentage of faculty with a journal publication.

Interest Continues to Grow in Drexel's Sacramento Programs

Here at the Center for Graduate Studies, we're looking forward to our first classes starting in January. But we have plenty keeping us busy in the meantime! We've been communicating with over 600 students interested in continuing their education at our new Sacramento Center, including 189 people with whom we talked at one of our Open Houses.

Among those 600 there is also one person we'd like to congratulate: our first confirmed student, Daniel Borlik, pictured here with Drexel University President Constantine Papadakis! A graduate of the University of the Pacific, Daniel will be pursuing an MS in Higher Education. He says of his decision:

For a while I have considered the possibilities of moving out of California to study student services at the postgraduate level. Drexel's nascent programs in Sacramento would give me the ability to learn in my chosen field with a local perspective as well as the added value of the East Coast viewpoint.

If you're interested in joining Daniel and the hundreds of students interested in our Center for Graduate Studies, contact us!
