Special Information Session: December 3

On Wednesday, December 3, we will host our last Information Session of 2008. Join us after work from 6–7:30 p.m. for a night of special sessions and speakers. Here are four reasons why this Information Session will be special:

  • Program-specific sessions – The evening will begin with a 30-minute general introduction. Prospective students will break into smaller groups to learn about the degree programs that will begin in early January 2009. Various department representatives will be on hand to answer your questions:
    • MBA – LeBow College of Business Associate Dean Frank Linnehan and Assistant Dean Ron Nordone
    • Information Systems and Library and Information Science iSchool Dean David Fenske
    • Higher Education – Professor Dr. José Chávez
  • Instant admission decisions – For students who wish to apply to the MBA or the Master's in Higher Education, you'll be able to receive an instant admission decision. Bring all of your documents — application, letters of recommendation, official transcripts, and test scores (if required) — to the Information Session. Drexel program representatives will evaluate your credentials on the spot and give you an unofficial admission decision right there.
  • On-site application review – For students who wish to apply for the MSIS or MSLIS, program representatives will be on hand to review your application materials and let you know whether you've met the requirements for admission.
  • Our new space will be unveiled This will be the first time the Center for Graduate Studies will be open to the public. Refreshments, food, and parking will be on us. Just join us at One Capital Mall, second floor. Visit our website to reserve your spot at this event.

Drexel Quickly Approved by California Credentialing Commission

Beginning next September, Drexel's School of Education will offer a master's degree in Science of Instruction at the center in support of math, science, and technology competencies in elementary and secondary education. Right before Thanksgiving, the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) welcomed Drexel to California by formally approving the University as an educational provider for grades pre-kindergarten through 12.

The next step in the regulatory process will occur later this month, when Drexel submits its specific programs of study to the CTC. Students will have the option to obtain a Multiple Subject or Single Subject Teaching Credential (in areas of biology, chemistry, earth and planetary science, English, general science, mathematics, or physics) or certification with the MS degree.

The School of Education also plans to offer certifications in Special Education and Administrative Services, with the option of pursuing an Ed D.

Pakistan's Supreme Court Chief Justice Visits Drexel

On November 20, Pakistan's Supreme Court Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry, a prominent figure in the country's constitutional uprising last year, spoke to an audience of faculty and students in the Earle Mack School of Law. Justice Chaudhry paid a special visit to Drexel before being the guest of honor at an event later that evening which was co-sponsored by Drexel Law, the University of Pennsylvania Law School, Penn Law Dean's Speakers Fund, Penn Law National Lawyers Guild, the South Asian Center of the University of Pennsylvania, and the Pakistan Justice Coalition.

Justice Chaudhry addressed issues related to the political and legal turmoil, including the suspension of that country's constitution in 2007, that has plagued Pakistan. Justice Chaudhry's visit to Drexel Law was especially important as he is at the center of a movement to reinstate his seat on Pakistan's Supreme Court. Justice Chaudhry was removed from his post by former President Pervez Musharraf.

College of Nursing in National Spotlight for "Most Innovative Solution" to Health Care Access

The College of Nursing and Health Profession's 11th Street Family Health Services Center recently received national recognition from a leading health care organization, the American Academy of Nursing (AAN). The academy is an elected group of the 1,500 most accomplished nurses in the United States.

The AAN's recent "Raise the Voice" campaign cited the College of Nursing and Health Profession's 11th Street Family Health Services Center as one of three national models providing a powerful example of nurse-led solutions that are currently tackling serious health care challenges.

The health center is featured in a new video produced by the academy that will be used for policy makers as one of this country's two most innovative solutions to promoting access to care.

Patricia Gerrity, RN, PhD, FAAN, associate dean for community programs, and Donna Shalala Hon. '07, the nation's longest-serving U.S. secretary of Health and Human Services (from 1993 to 2001), are featured in the film. The video is available to be viewed on YouTube.

iSchool Alumni Among 2009 ALA Emerging Leaders

Three Drexel graduates will take the national spotlight in January, when the American Library Association (ALA) holds its midwinter meeting in Denver. Daniel Overfield MS '05, Carol Smith MS/MSIS '06, and Helen Snowden MS '08, will be recognized as "emerging leaders." The ALA's conference will begin with acknowledging them and all other 2009 Emerging Leaders.

According to the ALA's website, this program "enables newer librarians from across the country to participate in problem-solving work groups, network with peers, gain an inside look into ALA structure, and have an opportunity to serve the profession in a leadership capacity. It puts participants on the fast track to ALA committee volunteerism as well as other professional library-related organizations."
