Department of Chemistry to Present Lecture by Dr. Stephanie Sen
The Department of Chemistry will present a lecture by Dr. Stephanie Sen, adjunct associate professor, Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology, Purdue University, titled "Adventures in Insect Juvenile Hormone Metabolism," today, December 12, 2007, at 11 a.m. in Room 109, Disque Hall (32nd and Chestnut Streets).
Insects are different from all other animals in their ability to produce the isoprenoid juvenile hormone to controlling their growth, development, and reproduction. Although juvenile hormone is a single chemical in most insect species, it is a complex blend of structurally-related compounds in the Lepidoptera, an insect order that includes all moth and butterfly species. How lepidopteran insects make the various juvenile hormone structures and whether their metabolism can be selectively inhibited in order to produce a targeted insecticide, has been the focus of Dr. Sen's research. As expected, the Lepidoptera possess several enzymes with altered structure and/or mechanism. But other insect species were also found to have isoprenoid-forming enzymes that differ from other animals.
