Counseling Center Offers Help with Holiday Blues

The Drexel University Student Counseling Center on the Center City Hahnemann Campus will present a "Holiday Mental Health Screening Day" on December 11, 2007, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Klahr Lobby of the New College Building (245 N. 15th Street).

The counseling center will provide tips for dealing with holiday stress, eating healthfully over the holidays, learning relaxation strategies, and more.

University Procurement to Host "Procurement 101"

"Procurement 101" sessions are for faculty and staff with procurement responsibilities for their department or division. Information will be provided about new services and programs that are designed to save departments money.

Strategic partners at the sessions will speak about their new products and services, how to properly process University purchases, how to request estimates from vendors and who to call to get purchasing questions answered.

Sessions are being offered in various locales and timeframes to ease scheduling: At each session, there will be refreshments, give-a-ways and door prizes. To register, email procurement@drexel.edu with your name, telephone number, department and the session you would like to attend

Save the Date: Student Conference on Global Challenges

The new Office of International Programs will sponsor a Student Conference on Global Challenges on February 29, 2008, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Edmund D. Bossone Research Enterprise Center (Market Street between 31st and 32nd Streets).

The conference will be organized into concurrent student panels with faculty experts as moderators. The panels will fall under the following broadly defined categories:

Dr. Eric Zillmer to Lecture: "Destination Guantanamo Bay"

International Area Studies and the International Café will present a talk by Dr. Eric Zillmer, Pacifico Professor of Psychology, "Destination Guantanamo Bay, the Legitimacy of GTMO: An Eyewitness Report", on December 12, 2007, from noon to 1:30 p.m. in room 2020 of MacAlister Hall (33rd and Chestnut Streets).

Center City Campus FREE Movie Night: SUPERBAD

The Office of University Student Life will show the movie Superbad today, December 7, 2007, at 7 p.m. in Geary B Auditorium on the first floor of the New College Building (245 N. 15th Street). This movie screening is FREE for all students and their guests.

Superbad is about two socially inept teenage boys who are about to graduate from high school. Since they have been accepted to different colleges, they have to now contemplate life apart. Evan and Seth decide to join forces one last time and reverse a lifelong losing streak with the ladies in one panic-driven night.

University Crossings Stair Run

Beta Beta Beta and the Office of Residential Living will sponsor a stair run Saturday, December 8, 2007, from 9 a.m. to noon at University Crossings (101 N. 32nd Street).

Registration is $3 per person, $5 if two people sign up together. Sign-up in the lobby of University Crossings.

All the proceeds generated from the event will purchase mosquito netting to be placed over beds at an African village. Each net costs $10, and can potentially save three people, as children in the villages typically share beds.

Department of Homeland Security Scholarship and Fellowship Program

The Drexel Fellowships Office announces that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Scholarship and Fellowship Program is now accepting applications for the 2008-09 academic year.

The DHS program is open to sophomores, pre-juniors and students who will be starting graduate school in the fall. The program is intended for students interested in pursuing the basic science and technology innovations that can be applied to the DHS mission. The deadline for applications is January 7, 2008.

Hellenic American Educational Foundation Fellowship

The Drexel Fellowships Office has announced a new fellowship opportunity for graduating seniors and graduate students interested in careers in education. The Hellenic American Educational Foundation offers fellowships to work at an elementary and secondary school outside Athens.

The fellows are chosen to act as young ambassadors to the schools, strengthening the ties between the foundation and the United States, and providing a cross-cultural educational experience. The role of the fellows includes sharing their culture, enthusiasm, ideas, language and knowledge with the school community.

Chamber Music Society to Present Monica Groop

The Philadelphia Chamber Music Society will present Finnish mezzo-soprano Monica Groop (above), accompanied by pianist Rudolf Jansen, on Monday, December 12, 2007, at 8 p.m. in the Perelman Theater of the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts in Philadelphia (Broad and Spruce Streets). 

Groop appeared on the Philadelphia scene with PCMS in 2006 as a last-minute substitute for tenor Matthew Polenzani, who had suffered a death in his family. Although few audience members knew of Groop at the time, the response to her performance was extremely positive.
 
Groop’s rich and diverse program on Monday evening includes songs by Schubert, Clara Schumann, Bartok, Grieg, Mahler, and Schoenberg.

The rebroadcast of the "How to Get a Job" episode also featured Dr. George P. Tsetsekos, dean of LeBow College of Business; Dr. Donna M DeCarolis, head of the management department in LeBow College of Business and academic director of the Laurence A. Baiada Center for Entrepreneurship in Technology; and Nicole Gay, auxiliary instructor for Co-op 101 in the Steinbright Career Development Center.

Noah Cohen, a senior majoring in communications, and Stephanie Takach, a freshman majoring in communications, shared a byline with two other reporters in a New York Post story published on December 6, 2007.
