National Wildlife Federation Competition to Fight Global Warming
The National Wildlife Federation (NWF) is hosting the second annual "Chill Out: Campus Solutions to Global Warming" competition. This is the only nationwide contest recognizing campuses for their efforts to solve global warming.
Projects that address clean energy, energy efficiency, transportation, habitat restoration, waste reduction and more will be judged in the contest. Students can enter by writing a 500-word essay describing Drexel's efforts toward these goals. They can also create an original three-minute video about their project, and upload it to YouTube. Winning videos will be chosen by the NWF and the YouTube community.
This is an opportunity for students, faculty and staff to highlight projects and campus initiatives that address global warming. Winning schools will receive national recognition, prizes and grant money for their efforts. They will also be featured on the NWF's multimedia "Chill Out" broadcast on April 16, 2008. This broadcast will showcase the winning schools, various discussions and the winning YouTube entries.
Entries are due November 30, 2007. For more information and an entry form, visit http://www.campuschillout.org.

Leonard Pearlstein Gallery Presents "Life's Joys-Life's Disappointments"
The Leonard Pearlstein Gallery, in the Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design, announces its upcoming fall exhibit, "Life's Joys-Life's Disappointments," by Philadelphia artist Michael Grothusen. The exhibit will run from November 5 through December 12, 2007. A reception will be held on November 14, from 6 to 8 p.m. Grothusen will speak prior to the reception at 5 p.m. in Ruth Auditorium, Nesbitt Hall (33rd and Market Streets).
In "Life's Joys-Life's Disappointments," Grothusen works on an architectural scale, creating two steel sculptures that are reminiscent of a funeral urn, trophy or similar commemorative object. The traditional notion of a sculpture as a commemorative object is a distinct focus in this work, however, the exact event the sculpture is commemorating is unspecified and open to interpretation. As the title of the exhibition suggests, the viewer is asked to define the meaning of the work as a monument for his or her own successes and failures.
Grothusen's sculpture and installations have been exhibited extensively throughout the region. He is well-known for his inventive use of common materials on an architectural scale.
A tri-fold exhibition card with photographs of the exhibition and an essay by curator Leah Douglas will be available at the reception.
