Drexel to Host First 2003 Philadelphia Mayoral Debate

Drexel University will host the first of three mayoral debates between incumbent Democrat John F. Street and Republican challenger Sam Katz tonight, October 9, 2003, from 7 - 8 p.m. at Mandell Theater.

The candidates will take questions from a panel of minority journalists moderated by CN8 news anchor Arthur Fennell. Panelists include Philadelphia Tribune reporter Nia Ngina Meeks; Alan Tu, senior producer of WHYY's Radio Times; freelance writer Hassan Sudler; and Henry Veguilla, host of WYBE-TV's Philly Live: Your Latino Connection. Sponsors include, the Philadelphia Association of Black Journalists, Drexel University and the local chapters of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association and the Asian-American Journalists Association.

Drexel's participation in the debate was organized by the Office of Government and Community Relations, under the direction of Senior Vice President Joseph Cascerceri. The debate is a ticketed event and not open to the general public.

University to Host Earth Charter Summit

Drexel is one of 30 worldwide sites hosting the third annual Earth Charter Summit on Saturday, October 11, 2003, from 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. The Summit begins with a welcome by local organizer Susan Curry and Provost Harvill Eaton at 9:45 a.m. in the Main Building Auditorium.

The Summit offers over 30 workshops emphasizing the world community, social justice and the environment. Workshop topics such as disarmament, ecospirituality and sustainable peace will be held in the Main Building Auditorium and classrooms in Randell and Curtis Halls.

Depression Screenings

Counselors from the Office of Counseling and Health on the University City Main Campus and the Student Counseling Center on the Center City Hahnemann Campus will provide free depression screenings for students, faculty and staff today, October 9, 2003, National Depression Screening Day.

Screenings for students on the University City Main Campus will be conducted at the Creese Student Union Complex patio from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. Students, faculty and staff on the Center City Hahnemann Campus can be screened in the Klahr Lobby in the New College Building from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Gerald Stern to Read Poems

National Book Award recipient Gerald Stern will read selections from his poems in the Paul Peck Alumni Center today, October 9, 2003, at 11 a.m. Students, faculty and staff are invited to attend this free event.

Widely regarded as one of America's major poets, Stern has published more than 12 books of poetry, including American Sonnets (2002), Last Blue (2001), Odd Mercy (1995) and This Time, winner of the 1998 National Book Award. A four-time recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, Stern has received numerous awards and recognitions, including PEN Award and Fellowship in the Academy of American Poets.
