Green Globes Assessment and Rating
The Department of Facilities and Drexel Green will present a talk regarding the Green Globes Building Assessment and Rating System today, October 6, 2008, from 1 to 4 p.m. in room 209, Bellet Building (1505 Race Street).
The University is in the process of adopting the Green Globes Green Building Assessment and Rating System for new construction.This presentation by Kevin A. Stover, PE, Green Building Initiative, will explore the guiding principles of the Green Globes initiative and how these principles are integrated into a building management tool that includes an assessment protocol, rating system and a framework of guidance for integrating environmentally friendly design and operation into buildings.
The presentation will conclude with a live Web demonstration of buildings and projects.

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Drexel University College of Medicine and the Office of Human Resources will present a Women’s Health Lecture, “Protect and Detect: What Every Woman Should Know About Gynecologic Cancer,” on Friday, October 10, 2008, from noon to 1 p.m. at the Faculty Club, sixth floor, MacAlister Hall (33rd and Chestnut Streets).
Stephanie A. King, M.D. (above), an associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology, DUCoM, will talk about the important screening and early warning symptoms of cervical, ovarian and uterine cancers. Dr. King completed her internship and residency in obstetrics, and received a fellowship in gynecologic oncology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. She is board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology and gynecologic oncology. Her areas of expertise include radical pelvic surgery for gynecologic malignancies. She developed the laparoscopic technique SPA (Single Port Access)with her husband, Dr. Paul Curcillo, a general surgeon.
This event is free and open to Drexel faculty and staff. A light lunch will be served. Reservations are not necessary.

Memorial Service for Dr. Mary K. Howett
The College of Arts and Sciences invites all members of the University community to a memorial service celebrating the life of Dr. Mary K. Howett (above) on Tuesday, October 7, 2008, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at Mandell Theater (33rd and Chestnut Streets).
Dr. Howett was a professor and head of the Department of Bioscience and Biotechnology from 2003 until her death on Wednesday, August 20, 2008, from complications due to leukemia. A champion of graduate-student education and junior faculty member development, her leadership was a key component of the successful expansion of the department as a sought-after undergraduate major and a highly-productive research enterprise.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Mary K. Howett Scholarship Fund at Drexel University, Office of Institutional Advancement, 3141 Chestnut Street, Suite 310, Philadelphia, PA 19104.

The presenter will be Dr. Scott O. Lilienfeld (above), professor of psychology, Emory University. He received the 1998 David Shakow Award; is the founder and editor of the Scientific Review of Mental Health Practice; associate editor of Applied and Preventive Psychology; and a regular columnist for Scientific American Mind magazine.

Italian Philadelphia Scavenger Hunt
The Italian Student Organization will host an Italian Philadelphia scavenger hunt on Saturday, October 11, 2008, from noon to 3 p.m. A maximum of 15 teams of two will meet at The Quad (between Chestnut and Market Streets and 32nd and 33rd Streets). Rain location: room 109, Matheson Hall (32nd and Market Streets).
Each team will have its knowledge of Philadelpia tested and will be given clues that lead team members around the city in search of Italian landmarks.
Prizes include $150 in cash and $50 gift certificates to various Italian businesses in Philadelphia.
Registration is from 11 to 11:30 a.m. A $10 registration fee per team will be charged.

Emergency Preparedness Conference
The Drexel Engineering Cities Initiative (DECI) will host a two-day conference for emergency services practitioners and planners, not-for-profit emergency service agencies and scholars studying issues of risk and preparedness. This conference, the first event of its kind in the Delaware Valley, will take place on the University City Main Campus on Friday and Saturday, October 10 and 11, 2008.
The conference focuses on vulnerable populations, who often require creative measures for planning, resources and citizen outreach in order to meet their needs in the face of disaster and emergency situations. Local and regional officials working with the region's university research community propose to combine their efforts toward making Philadelphia as prepared as possible in the face of disaster.
DECI welcomes all members of the Drexel community to attend this two-day conference. Registration fees will be waived for Drexel faculty and students.

International Job Search Workshop
The LeBow College Office of Undergraduate Career Services will host a workshop,"Going Global: International Job Search Workshop," on Tuesday, October 7, 2008, from 5 to 7 p.m. in room 109, Matheson Hall (32nd and Market Streets).
This event will feature a student panel, a presentation by KPMG’s Philadelphia campus development manager and a review of University International Co-op programs with Susan Braun, manager of international cooperative education programs at the Steinbright Career Development Center.
The students on the panel will share their experiences at Citigroup; Deutsche Bank; McNeil Nutritionals; The Leatherback Trust; and Von Braun and Schreiber.
