SAFAC Recruiting New Members

The Student Activity Fee Allocation Committee (SAFAC) is looking for dedicated, hardworking, vocal and motivated people to help make a difference on campus. Women's Health Lecture

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Drexel University College of Medicine and the Office of Human Resources will present a  Women’s Health Lecture, “Protect and Detect: What Every Woman Should Know About Gynecologic Cancer,” on Friday, October 10, 2008, from noon to 1 p.m. at the Faculty Club, sixth floor, MacAlister Hall (33rd and Chestnut Streets).

Stephanie A. King, M.D., an associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology, DUCoM, will talk about the important screening and early warning symptoms of cervical, ovarian and uterine cancers. Dr. King completed her internship and residency in obstetrics, and received a fellowship in gynecologic oncology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. She is board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology and gynecologic oncology. Her areas of expertise include radical pelvic surgery for gynecologic malignancies. She developed the laparoscopic technique SPA (Single Port Access)with her husband, Dr. Paul Curcillo, a general surgeon.

This event is free and open to Drexel faculty and staff. A light lunch will be served. Reservations are not necessary.

Dance Studio Grand Opening

The Dance Program will celebrate the opening of The Ellen Forman Memorial Dance Studio with a reception honoring Ellen Forman today, October 3, 2008, at 7 p.m. at Mandell Theater (33rd and Chestnut Streets).

Ellen Forman, a Philadelphia dance pioneer, was not only an innovative choreographer and charismatic performer, but was also co-founder and director of South Street Dance Company. She produced "Body/Language" at the Painted Bride Art Center, which brought  artists together to explore the integration of text and dance.

This opening is in conjunction with the newly-offered bachelor's degree in Dance, which leads to a master's degree in Dance/Movement Therapy.

The opening  reception is free and open to the public.

Shabbat Dinner Tonight

Hillel and the Panhellenic Council will host a Shabbat dinner today, October 3, 2008, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the living room, Van Rensselaer Hall (3320 Powelton Avenue).

Drexel Ultimate Practice

Drexel's Ultimate Frisbee Team will meet for practice on Monday, October 6, 2008, from 6:30 to 10 p.m. at Buckley Green (33rd and Arch Streets). 

The team practices every Monday at the same time and place.

All students are welcome to join the team. This year the Ultimate Frisbee Team would like to build more interest among women students.

There are  tournaments scheduled throughout the fall term. This year Drexel will host its first Philadelphia Ultimate Tournament on Saturday and Sunday, November 1 and 2, 2008.

Drexel Roller Hockey Tryouts

The Drexel Roller Hockey Club will hold tryouts tomorrow, October 4, 2008, from 8 a.m. to noon at the Feasterville Sportsplex (1331 Oreilly Drive, Feasterville, Pa.).

The Club will meet at 6:30 a.m. at the Drexel Pizza parking lot and depart at 6:45 a.m. to car-pool to the rink, which is a 40-minute drive. Students trying out should bring all necessary equipment: skates, sticks, helmet with cage/shield, gloves, elbow pads, shin pads, girdle/hockey pants and cup. Students who do not have all of the equipment  may be able to borrow gear for the day.

There is a $20 try-out fee to help cover the cost of rink time.

Drexel players receive discounts on items purchased at the rink's pro shop, which will be open for the duration of the try-out.

Medical Students Association Meeting

The Drexel chapter of the American Medical Students Association (AMSA), will hold its first general body meeting on Monday, October 6, 2008, at 8 p.m. in room 2019, MacAlister Hall (33rd and Chestnut Streets).

All interested students are invited to attend this meeting to discuss exciting and innovative ideas for healthcare professionals. In addition to discussing plans for this year, AMSA will raffle-off a discounted MCAT Kaplan course. Any student who is looking into a career in the health professions is invited to join this group of students who share a passion for improving healthcare.

Focus Group: Marketing and Africa

The Department of Culture and Communication will host a focus group about marketing images of Africa in Western media on Thursday, October 9, 2008, from 4 to 6 p.m. in room 116, Korman Center (33rd Street between Chestnut and Market Streets).

This focus group is being conducted by a University researcher.
