Alumnus Christopher Ferguson Assigned to NASA Crew
Astronaut and Drexel mechanical engineering alumnus Christopher Ferguson ’84 (above, two views of Capt. Ferguson: left, 1984 Lexerd yearbook photo, and present day) will command Endeavour’s STS-126 mission, targeted for launch in September 2008, according to a NASA announcement October 1, 2007.
The flight will deliver equipment to the International Space Station that will enable larger crews to reside aboard the complex.
STS-126 will be the second spaceflight for Capt. Ferguson, who piloted STS-115 in September 2006 during an 11-day mission to the International Space Station. Capt. Ferguson operated the shuttle’s robotic arm and maneuvered a 17-ton truss segment to the station and inspected the shuttle heat shield.
Capt. Ferguson was selected by NASA in 1998 and is stationed at the Johnson Space Center in Houston. The Philadelphia native attended Naval Postgraduate School, where he earned a master’s degree in aeronautical engineering in 1991.
Drexel has produced two other alumni-astronauts in addition to Chris Ferguson, Dr. James Bagian ’73, Hon. ’87, and Paul Richards ’87.

Alumnus to Speak on Co-op Opportunities in China
The Pennoni Honors College and the Steinbright Career Development Center will host a reception and presentation by alumnus Michael C. Ngo BS '98 (above) tomorrow, Wednesday, October 3, 2007 at the Paul Peck Alumni Center (32nd and Market Streets), 5:30 to 7 p.m. Ngo will speak on "Opportunities for Co-Ops in China's Burgeoning Global Market."
Students interested in Chinese culture and/or international co-op opportunities in China should plan to attend. There will be a question-and-answer session following the presentation and a networking opportunity. Food and beverages will be provided.

Johnson & Johnson to Host Information Session
The Steinbright Career Development Center (SCDC) will host Johnson & Johnson for an information session today, Tuesday, October 2, 2007, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Main Gallery, Paul Peck Alumni Center (32nd and Market Streets).
Students will have an opportunity to meet and interact with Johnson & Johnson employees during this casual networking event. In addition, students can participate in interactive games, win prizes and learn more about the INDEPENDENCE iBOT 4000 Mobility System, a computerized, mobilized wheelchair designed by Johnson & Johnson. Johnson & Johnson company giveaways and food and beverages will be provided.
Alumnus Dominic Caruso '80, vice president, finance and chief financial officer, will discuss Johnson & Johnson, its leadership development programs and opportunities in the company.
This event is open to all Drexel students. Those who are seeking full-time employment are encouraged to attend in order to make personal connections with potential future employers.

Television Workshop for Producers, Reporters,
Photojournalists, News Management and Students
The Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the National Television Academy, in association with the Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design and the Rudman Institute for Entertainment Studies, will present Al Tompkins (above) from the Poynter Institute leading a television workshop on Saturday, October 6, 2007, at the Ruth Auditorium in Nesbitt Hall (33rd and Market Streets) from 9:15 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Tompkins will help TV professionals and practitioners learn how to tell great interactive stories and use the Internet to enrich their work. Tompkins' workshop will help those pursuing a career in television management, production and other media industry fields build even greater stories for free through online databases and other resources.
A continental breakfast will be served at 8:30 a.m. and a boxed lunch at noon. This event is $30 for students, $60 for members and $75 for nonmembers.

Lecture and Book-signing by Sabuda and Reinhart
The Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design welcomes best-selling and iconic pop-up book creators Robert Sabuda and Matthew Reinhart on Wednesday, October 3, 2007, for a free lecture open to the public. The lecture will be preceded by a book-signing of Sabuda and Reinhart's entertaining and distinctive works, which are well-known to thousands of children and adults.
Sabuda and Reinhart will also conduct a workshop with students in Westphal College's graphic design program. All events with Sabuda and Reinhart are presented by the Sibby Merkel Brasler Lecture Series.
Working from their New York City studio, Sabuda and Reinhart have reinvented the world of pop-up books. Their creations are widely used in classrooms as teaching aides and have garnered major critical and popular acclaim. Mainstays on the children's bestsellers lists, the "dream team" of illustrated books has created over twenty-five pop-ups, including brilliant takes on classics such as Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Sabuda and Reinhart's books explore a variety of mediums including mosaic and faux stained glass.
The authors will sign books from noon to 1 p.m. at the Living Arts Lounge, MacAlister Hall (33rd and Chestnut Streets). Copies of Sabuda and Reinhart's Mommy?, Encyclopedia Prehistorica: Dinosaurs, The 12 Days of Christmas Anniversary Edition: A Pop-Up Celebration and Alice's Adventures in Wonderland will be available for sale at the signing. Seating for the lecture is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Lecture on "Modeling Parkinson's Disease and Deep Brain Stimulation"
The College of Arts and Sciences Dean's Seminar Series resumes this new academic year with the lecture "Modeling Parkinson's Disease and Deep Brain Stimulation" on Wednesday, October 3, 2007, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in Room 109, Disque Hall (32nd & Chestnut Streets). Dr. Yixin Guo, assistant professor of mathematics, will discuss the therapeutic effectiveness of deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) that may arise through its effects on inhibitory basal ganglia outputs.
The event is free and open to students, faculty and staff. Refreshments will be served.

Great Works Symposium: "Understanding Epidemics"
The Great Works Symposium will present "Understanding Epidemics: The Public Health Perspective," a lecture by Dr. Craig J. Newschaffer (above), Drexel professor of epidemiology and biostatistics and chair of the department of epidemiology and biostatistics at the School of Public Health, today, October 2, 2007, at 3:30 p.m. in Room 125, Nesbitt Hall (33rd and Market Streets).
In this lecture, Dr. Newschaffer will discuss how public health scientists define, identify, and study epidemics. His talk will provide basic information about the approaches epidemiologists have used in the past and use today to explore the clustering of disease. In addition, he will discuss how confronting the challenges of epidemic disease have shaped the discipline of epidemiology and the field of public health.
This talk is the second lecture in the Great Works Symposium (UNIV 241) for fall 2007: "Epidemic: Disease Shaping History and Society." Seats are still available for students interested in registering for this course.

Multicultural Student Reception to Be Held Tonight
The Office of Multicultural Programs will host its annual Multicultural Student Reception for incoming students tonight, Tuesday, October 2, 2007, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Main Building Great Court (32nd and Chestnut Streets).
The reception is open to the entire Drexel community. Last year's reception drew more than 200 participants. The event includes an array of cultural foods, a multicultural student organization fair and performances by student organizations to celebrate the start of Latino Heritage Month.

Organizational Meeting Slated for Music Industry Collective
Interested in composing for film, television and media? Join Jim Klein, assistant professor in the music industry program, on Wednesday, October 3, 2007, at 5 p.m. in Room 2010, MacAlister Hall (33rd and Chestnut Street).
Professor Klein is organizing a collective of student composers interested in composing music for film, television, video games, and radio projects that are being created throughout the University. The group will meet several times each term to share information and critique each other's work.
In addition, students will establish and maintain a Web site that will feature the group's work, give information about its members and allow potential clients to shop for composers.

Spend a term sailing the high seas! Through a unique partnership with SEA Semester, based in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, Drexel students can spend a term learning about the ocean environment and its relationship to the earth and to human affairs while earning Drexel credits. The program is open to all majors. Federal aid travels with you, and special scholarships are available for this program.
