Sierra Night Ride

The Drexel Sierra Club will sponsor "Night Rides"  on the first and third Wednesdays of each month. Participants will ride around the city, visiting various Philadelphia sites and enjoying the after-dark temperatures. Night rides depart at 9 p.m. from the Mario the Dragon statue (33rd and Market Streets).  

Don't have a bike? Try Drexel Bike Share. Drexel Sierra Club encourages the use of bicycle helmets as well as lights and reflectors. While the ride is open to all skill levels, the Sierra Club is not responsible for the safety of the riders.

TrebleMakers Auditions

The TrebleMakers, the University's all-female a capella group, will hold auditions today, October 1, 2008, at 7 p.m. on the second floor, MacAlister Hall (33rd and Chestnut Streets).

All current graduate and undergraduate students are invited to audition.

Singers should come prepared with a short, 30-second solo. It should be something recognizable, relatively contemporary and that shows off your voice. The audition will also consist of some simple sight reading and range testing and a group sing with one of The Treblemakers' songs.

African Student Association BBQ

The Drexel African Student Association (DASA) will host a barbeque for new and current members today, October 1, 2008, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Buckley Green Volleyball Courts  (33rd and Arch Streets).

Observatory Open House Tonight

The Department of Physics will host an open house today, October 1, 2008, at 7 p.m.at the Joseph R. Lynch Observatory, atop the Main Building, (32nd and Chestnut Streets).

This will be the last open house until next fall. All members of the Drexel community and friends, whether amateur astronomers or those just interested in star-gazing, are invited to see Saturn, Mars, the Pleiades, the Beehive and the Great Nebula in Orion, and check out two new hand-powered telescopes the University has acquired.

Phi Sigma Pi Rush Tonight

Phi Sigma Pi invites students to attend an information night to learn more about the organization and meet the brothers of Gamma Xi  today, October 1, 2008, at 7 p.m. in room 101, Main Building (32nd and Chestnut Streets).

Phi Sigma Pi is a co-ed fraternity that is unique in its combination of an honor society, a service club and a social fraternity. The fraternity is an active campus organization that incorporates the ideas of scholarship, leadership and fellowship in a wide variety of experiences. Ranging from academic programs and leadership opportunities to service projects and social gatherings, the activities celebrate the diversity of  its members and promote the qualities of involvement and brotherhood.

Phi Sigma Pi is seeking new members who are friendly, well-rounded and interested in making an impact on campus.

Eligible students should have at least 12 credit hours completed, a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.0 and a minimum of three remaining quarters before graduation.

Dragon Career Fest

The Steinbright Career Development Center will host the Dragon Career Fest on Thursday, October 2, 2008, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Daskalakis Athletic Center (33rd and Market Streets).

All students and alumni are encouraged to participate.

More than 250 employers are eager to meet interested students and job candidates to talk with them about their companies and job opportunities. This is an excellent opportunity to conduct a proactive job search, research the competitive job market, target specific employers and develop future networking contacts.

SAFAC Recruiting

The Student Activity Fee Allocation Committee (SAFAC) is looking for dedicated, hardworking, vocal and motivated people to help make a difference on campus. Students who are interested in joining SAFAC may download an application at http://ww.drexel.edu/safac.

Global Perspectives on the Election

The Office of International Programs and International Area Studies' International Cafe will host a panel discussion "Global Perspectives on the Presidential Election,"  as part of its series "Cross Country Conversations: Are We Really Worlds Apart?" today, October 1, 2008, from noon to 1:30 p.m. in room 2019, MacAlister Hall (33rd and Chestnut Streets). 

The American political system can be confusing, overwhelming or irrelevant to anyone, but this is especially true for international students. Although they cannot vote in U.S. elections, many issues related to these elections are similar to issues in their own countries and the outcomes are likely to affect their lives. This panel discussion is designed to encourage audience participation and is open to all students, faculty and staff.

Speaker Program: Sex and Excess

The Undergraduate Student Government Association will present, "Sex and Excess," today, October 1, 2008, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Mitchell Auditorium, Bossone Research Enterprise Center (Market Street, between 31st and 32nd Streets).

Is it possible for students to engage in high-risk behavior and achieve their goals for a successful college experience and beyond? In this high energy and interactive program, Elaine Pasqua, sexual awareness educator, will help students reassess their goals and evaluate the negative effects of high-risk behaviors.

Memorial Service for Dr. Mary K. Howett

The College of Arts and Sciences invites all members of the University community to a memorial service celebrating the life of Dr. Mary K. Howett on Tuesday, October 7, 2008, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at Mandell Theater (33rd and Chestnut Streets).

Dr. Howett was a professor and head of the Department of Bioscience and Biotechnology from 2003 until her death on Wednesday, August 20, 2008, from complications due to leukemia. A champion of graduate-student education and junior faculty member development, her leadership was a key component of the successful expansion of the department as a sought-after undergraduate major and a highly-productive research enterprise.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Mary K. Howett Scholarship Fund at Drexel University, Office of Institutional Advancement, 3141 Chestnut Street, Suite 310, Philadelphia, PA 19104.

8 to the Bar Auditions

8 to the Bar, the University's all-male a cappella group, will hold auditions on Thursday, October 2, 2008. Interested students should arrive at 8 p.m. in the lobby, Bossone Research Enterprise Center (Market Street between 31st and 32nd Streets). The actual audition process will begin at 8:30 p.m. at Mitchell Auditorium in the Bossone Center.

Interested students should bring their schedules for fall term and have a short solo with lyrics of about 30 seconds prepared for the audition.

A song you might hear on the radio would be a good selection. Auditions are open to any current male student. Those students who are unable to attend the auditions but would still like to try out for the group, should email 8tothebar@gmail.com before Thursday.
