Join Habitat for Humanity Tonight

All students are invited to attend this term's first meeting of the Drexel chapter of Habitat for Humanity today, September 25, 2008, at 6 p.m. in room C, Greenwalt Student Development Center (32nd and Chestnut Streets).

The meeting will serve as an information session for prospective members, detailing current events and activities, as well as opportunities for freshman to complete their five hours of community engagement with Habitat.

Historical Cooking Exhibition

The Drexel University Libraries will present  "Historical Cooking," an exhibition, featuring a collection from the University Archives of recipes, images and notebooks of students and faculty from the early cookery program at the Drexel Institute, through December 2008 in the Hagerty Library (33rd and Market Streets).

There will be an opening reception on Friday, September 26, 2008, from from 4 to 5 p.m. on the lower level, Hagerty Library. The reception is open to all and includes complimentary refreshments based on recipes taught at the University from 1894 to 1914.

Chess Team Meeting

Students are invited to put their homework aside and come play chess in a casual, low-key environment today, September 25, 2008, from 6 to 9 p.m in the Bookmark Cafe, Hagerty Library (33rd and Market Streets).

Debate Watch Party

The Great Works Symposium, in partnership with the Drexel Votes 2008 Initiative, will host a watch party for the Presidential debate on Friday, September 26, 2008, from 8 to11 p.m., at the Bookmark Cafe, Hagerty Library (33rd and Market Streets).

A discussion of the Presidential race will begin at 8 p.m. prior to the debate between John McCain and Barack Obama, which begins at 9 p.m.

Complimentary pizza will be served.

Phi Sigma Pi Info Night

Phi Sigma Pi invites students to attend an information night to learn more about the organization and meet the brothers of Gamma Xi on Monday, September 29, 2008, at 7 p.m. in room D, Greenawalt Student Development Center, lower level of Creese Student Center (32nd and Chestnut Streets).

Phi Sigma Pi is a co-ed fraternity that is unique in its combination of an honor society, a service club and a social fraternity. The fraternity is an active campus organization that incorporates the ideas of scholarship, leadership and fellowship in a wide variety of experiences. Ranging from academic programs and leadership opportunities to service projects and social gatherings, the activities celebrate the diversity of  its members and promote the qualities of involvement and brotherhood.

Phi Sigma Pi is seeking new members who are friendly, well-rounded and interested in making an impact on campus.

Eligible students should have at least 12 credit hours completed, a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.0 and a minimum of three remaining quarters before graduation.

Auditions for Fall Musical

The Department of Performing Arts will hold auditions for "Blood Brothers" on Sunday, September 28, from 5 to 9 p.m. and Monday, September 29, 2008, from 7 to 10 p.m. at Mandell Theater (33rd and Chestnut Streets).

“Blood Brothers” is an ensemble musical set in late 1950s London about twin brothers who are separated at birth. They grow up living only houses away from each other in different social classes, one rich and one poor. They become good friends and fall in the love with the same girl, but fate eventually catches up with them.

Students are invited to prepare a musical theater song of their choice or bring sheet music in their key. An accompanist will be provided.

Those who don’t have something prepared will be taught a song from the show at the beginning of the auditions.

 A copy of the script and CD of the music from the show are available in the Performing Arts office, room 2018, MacAlister Hall (33rd and Chestnut Streets).

Fall Classic Tennis Tournament

All tennis players are invited to test their skills in a tournament open to the entire Drexel community on Saturday, September 27, 2008, from noon to 4 p.m. at the 34th Street Tennis Courts (34th Street and Lancaster Avenue).

The format will be single elimination, bracket style. The first matches will be mini-sets, followed by full sets in the semis and finals. There will be men's and women's brackets, with prizes for winners in both brackets.

Those who are interested in playing more consistently this fall will have an opportunity to sign-up for the Intramural League.

Registration begins at 11:30 a.m.

Pre-registration and ES&P Meetings

The Steinbright Career Development Center is currently holding pre-registration and ES&P meetings for students scheduled for spring/summer 2009 co-ops. Students must pre-register for co-op before October 31, 2008.

First-time co-op students must schedule pre-registration meetings in order to participate in the co-op process.

Students returning from co-op must schedule meetings with their coordinators to review their ES&Ps (Employment Summary & Planner) before participating in their next co-op.

Nursing students should call 215-762-7577 to schedule a meeting. All other students should call the SCDC office at 215-895-2185.

The Combustible Radio Theatre

The Department of Theater's Late Night Series, in association with The Drexel Players and Mad Drama, will present The Combustible Radio Theater, a live radio theater event, on Friday, September 26, 2008, at 8 p.m. at Mandell Theatre (33rd and Chestnut Streets).

This edgy, comical and out-of-bounds event will be recorded with sound effects in front of a live audience and will air on WKDU (91.7 FM). The program features the Combustible Radio Players, as well as musical performances by rock/folk artists Jonah Delso and Sonni Shine.

This event is free, open to the public and will be followed by a reception.

Drexel Alumnus Wins Emmy

Made in L.A., a film by Drexel alumnus Robert Bahar (above), a 1998 graduate of the College of Engineering, won an Emmy in the category "Outstanding Continuing Coverage of a News Story, Long Form" at the 29th Annual News and Documentary Emmy Awards, which took place on September 22 in New York.

Bahar’s brother Daniel also received his undergraduate degree from Drexel in1998. Bahar’s father, Dr. Leon Bahar, is a professor emeritus of mechanical engineering and mechanics at Drexel.

Made in L.A. follows the story of three Latina immigrants working in Los Angeles garment sweatshops as they embark on a three-year odyssey to win basic labor protections from a mega-trendy clothing retailer. The film was screened at Drexel last October.

World Cafe Live Tonight

The World Cafe Live will present Donna Jean and the Tricksters (above) today, September 25, 2008, at 7:30 p.m. Downstairs at the World Cafe Live (3025 Walnut Street).

Donna Jean Godchaux MacKay was born to sing, and she’s done so with people like Elvis Presley, Percy Sledge, Boz Scaggs and Jerry Garcia. Now she has a new band that she believes is on a creative par with anything she’s ever done. The Grateful Dead alumna has joined up with six members of the next musical generation, Mookie Siegel (David Nelson Band); Wendy Lanter (Hope in Time); and Jeff Mattson, Tom Circosta, Klyph Black and Dave Diamond (Zen Tricksters), to form Donna Jean and the Tricksters.

Dragon Career Fest

The Steinbright Career Development Center will host the Dragon Career Fest on Thursday, October 2, 2008, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Daskalakis Athletic Center (33rd and Market Streets).

All students and alumni are encouraged to participate.

More than 250 employers are eager to meet interested students and job candidates to talk with them about their companies and job opportunities. This is an excellent opportunity to conduct a proactive job search, research the competitive job market, target specific employers and develop future networking contacts.

To get the most from the Dragon Career Fest, attend one of the “Success at the Career Fair” one-hour workshops open to participants on Friday, September 26, 2008, at noon, 2 p.m., 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. and Monday, September 29, 2008, at 11 a.m.,1 p.m., 3 p.m., and 6 p.m. at the SCDC Conference Room, 3201 Arch Street.

Mental Health Seminar

The Department of Psychology, the Philadelphia Behavior Therapy Association and Pearson Education will host a seminar, “Distinguishing Scientific from Pseudoscientific Mental Health Practices,” on Monday, October 6, 2008, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Mitchell Auditorium, Bossone Research Enterprise Center (Market Street, between 31st and 32nd Streets). 

The presenter will be Dr. Scott O. Lilienfeld, professor of psychology, Emory University. He received the 1998 David Shakow Award; is the founder and editor of the Scientific Review of Mental Health Practice; associate editor of Applied and Preventive Psychology and a regular columnist for Scientific American Mind magazine.

Food 4 Thought: Global Warming

University alumni, friends, faculty and staff are invited to "Food4Thought," an educational afternoon featuring lunch and a discussion on one of today’s most significant environmental issues, on Wednesday, October 1, 2008, from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Paul Peck Alumni Center (32nd and Market Streets).

Dr. James Spotila, professor in the Department of Bioscience & Biotechnology, will review the history of global warming and discuss his personal involvement in research and observations gained through a lifetime of scientific study.

The cost for this luncheon/discussion program is $10.
