Drexel News Media Watch


This special edition of the Drexel Daily Digest documents Drexel news coverage since the last digest was posted online August 22. Drexel faculty and administrators have been generous of their time and expertise in responding to the news media in its ongoing Hurricane Katrina coverage.

Dr. Charles Haas, L.D. Betz Chair Professor of environmental engineering and head of the Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering, appeared on a KYW-AM (1060) newscast September 14 in which he commented on the rebuilding process along the Gulf Coast. Dr. Haas commented on contamination on KYW-AM (1060) on September 9 and was quoted in The Philadelphia Inquirer on September 5 about the environmental impact of Hurricane Katrina.

Dr. Myrna Shure, professor of psychology, commented on how children are affected by Hurricane Katrina on a KYW-AM (1060) newscast September 13.

Dr. Lisa Ulmer, professor and chair of the Department of Community Health and Prevention, appeared on WCAU-TV (NBC 10) on September 9 to comment on her experience helping Hurricane Katrina victims suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. The story appeared on several other newscasts, including WCVB-TV (ABC-Boston), WNCN (ABC-Raleigh-Durham, N.C.) and KETV-TV (ABC-Omaha).

Dr. Robert D'Ovidio, assistant professor in the Department of Culture and Communication, was quoted on the Wired.com site September 20 about Predators and Prey Alert, a device that can be used to help police with online-harassment cases.
He was also quoted in The Philadelphia Inquirer on September 8 about the security risks involved with inviting Hurricane Katrina victims to stay at one's home. That story was syndicated in the Grand (N.D.) Forks Herald, the Tallahassee (Fla.) Democrat and the Centre Daily Times (State College, Pa.)

Dr. Richard Hamilton, associate professor of emergency medicine, appeared on KYW-TV (CBS 3) on September 7 to comment on road-weary Hurricane Katrina victims.

Dr. Richard Weggel, Samuel S. Baxter Professor in the Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering, appeared on CBS Sunday Morning on September 4 to comment on Hurricane Katrina. He was quoted in The Philadelphia Inquirer on September 1 about the levees in New Orleans in connection with Hurricane Katrina.
The story was syndicated in The Seattle Times, the Tallahassee (Fla.) Democrat and the Duluth (Minn.) News Tribune. Dr. Weggel also appeared on KYW-TV (CBS 3) on August 31, CN8 on September 1 and KLAS-TV (CBS - Las Vegas) on September 4 to comment on the hurricane. Metro also published a story in which Dr. Weggel was quoted.

Provost Stephen Director appeared on CN8 on September 1 to comment on Drexel's plans to help students from the areas affected by Hurricane Katrina. Those plans were also noted on WTXF-TV (FOX 29) on September 2.

Dr. Philip Mead, assistant professor of emergency medicine control, appeared on KYW-TV (CBS 3) on August 31 to comment on the psychological impact of Hurricane Katrina.

Dr. Walt Bien, research associate professor of bioscience and biotechnology, appears in an NJN (New Jersey public television) series highlighting his restoration of the New Jersey Pinelands National Reserve.

Drs. Bradford Jameson and Anna Tretiakova, Drexel University College of Medicine, appeared in the October 2005 issue of Technology Times. The story highlighted their research in serotonin for use as an immune function.

The School of Education's iPod giveaway to freshmen was noted on several newscasts September 22 originating from WPVI-TV (ABC 6). The story aired on WGGB-TV (ABC-Springfield/Holyoke, Mass.), WLS-TV (Chicago-ABC), KCAU-TV (ABC-Sioux City), WAPT-TV (ABC-Jackson, Miss.), KVUE-TV (ABC-Austin), KTWO-TV (ABC-Casper/Riverton, Wyo.), WABC-TV (ABC-New York), KRDO-TV (ABC-Colorado Springs/Pueblo, Colo.) and C-SPAN. The plan to distribute iPods was noted in The Chronicle of Higher Education on September 9.

Dr. Paul Oh, assistant professor of mechanical engineering, was quoted on the Wired.com site September 21 in a story about his demonstration of flying robots on Micro-Air-Vehicles at a National Science Foundation workshop. Drexel students demonstrated the robot on WRC-TV (NBC-Washington) on September 21.

Dennis Gallagher, associate professor in the School of Public Health, was noted in a story published in The Morning Call (Allentown, Pa.) on September 21 about the cost of establishing a health department in Northampton County.

Dr. Dennis Andrulis, director of the School of Public Health's Center for Health Equality, was cited in a story in the Richmond Times-Dispatch on September 20 for a study examining the decreasing number of public hospitals in the United States.

Dr. Eric Zillmer, Carl R. Pacifico Professor of Psychology, was quoted in a Philadelphia Daily News story September 19 about the different degrees of passion fans have for the Philadelphia Eagles.

Anthony J. Drexel, founder of the University, was featured in a profile in the Santa Barbara News-Press on September 17.

Dr. Marilyn G. Piety, assistant professor of English and philosophy, was noted in the September 16 edition of The Chronicle of Higher Education for her comments in the online journal The Philosophers' Magazine about the resignation of Peter Tudvad, who blew the whistle on questionable practices at the Center for Soren Kierkegaard Research at the University of Copenhagen. Dr. Piety also appeared on the Danish television news program Deadline on August 24 to comment on Tudvad's resignation.

Lynn Levin, adjunct assistant professor of English, was a guest on the WHYY-FM program Radio Times with Marty Moss-Coane on Sept. 16. The show featured a roundtable of poets.

Drexel's culinary arts program was featured in a Philadelphia Inquirer story September 15. William Woys Weaver, professor of culinary arts, was quoted in the story. The story also was published in The News-Sentinel (Fort Wayne, Ind.)

Dr. James Herbert, associate professor and director of clinical training, was a guest on National Public Radio's All Things Considered on September 12. Dr. Herbert spoke about why so many people share stories about their experiences on September 11, 2001.

Dr. James Spotila, L.D. Betz Chair Professor of Environmental Science, was featured on a WPVI-TV (ABC 6) broadcast September 10 that highlighted his work with leatherback turtles.

Dr. Shabab Minassian, Drexel University College of Medicine, appeared on WPHL-TV (WB 17) on September 9 to comment on medical problems.

Dr. Allan R. Tunkel, Drexel University College of Medicine, appeared on WTXF (FOX 29) newscasts September 6 and 7 to comment about a meningitis vaccine approved in January by the Food and Drug Administration. He also was noted in a September 2 story on the LifeClinic.com site about why scientists believe they are gaining a better understanding of how meningitis germs enter the brain.

Dr. Nily Dan, associate professor of chemical engineering, was noted in a story on the PhysOrg.com, Nanotech-Now.com and other Web sites September 1 and 2 about the finding of a mechanism that could provide a new tool for controlling the formation of nanoparticles. A Drexel-Georgia Tech research team discovered the mechanism.

Dr. Roger McCain, professor of economics, appeared on a WTXF-TV (FOX 29) broadcast August 30 to comment on soaring gas prices.

Dr. Shortie McKinney, professor of bioscience and biotechnology and director of the Nutrition Center, appeared on Good Day Philadelphia on WTXF-TV (FOX 29) and on KYW-AM on August 29 to comment on freshman weight gain.

James Kohler, '03 business administration and finance, and Nitin J. Khanna,'01 computer engineering, were noted in a Philadelphia Inquirer story August 26 about Philadelphia-based OmPay, a company that has developed a prepaid card for parking meters. Khanna is the company's president and chief operating officer, and Kohler serves as the chief executive officer.

Dr. David Brooks, research professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics, was quoted in The Baxter Bulletin (Mountain Home, Ark.) on August 25 about how students have reached a milestone of 100,000 measurements using a weather-monitoring device through the international science program GLOBE. Dr. Brooks commented on the Norfork, Ark., elementary school's work at a recent conference in Prague, Czech Republic.

Drexel's involvement with the Pennsylvania Governor's School for Information Technology was noted in a profile on Lauren Taglieri in the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review on August 25. Taglieri's team won a prize for developing Sid's Adventure, a computer game in which players may learn to operate computers and learn the ABC's and arithmetic.

He also was quoted in a story in the July issue of Discover about the design of buildings in earthquake zones.

Dr. Brad Layton, assistant professor of mechanical engineering, was noted in a story in the Philadelphia Daily News and Centre Daily Times on August 19 about six middle school students who competed in a robotics competition in Japan. Layton allowed the students to use his Drexel lab to build their robots.
