"Co-op Photo Op: Developing New Experiences"
The Steinbright Career Development Center invites students to enter photographs from national or international co-op locations for the photo contest "Co-op Photo Op: Developing New Experiences" by Friday, September 26, 2008.
What to enter:
Inventive photographs that showcase Drexel students living outside the Philadelphia area or abroad, Drexel students on the job, urban and rural landscapes or native people in host countries.
What contestants can win:
First prize: $300; second prize: $150; third prize: $50
Who may participate:
All Drexel students completing co-op internationally or outside the Delaware Valley area.

Drexel Alumnus Nominated for Emmy
Made in L.A., a film by Drexel alumnus Robert Bahar, ’98 (above), has been nominated for an Emmy in the category "Outstanding Continuing Coverage of a News Story, Long Form" at the 29th Annual News and Documentary Emmy Awards, which will take place on Monday, September 22, 2008 at the Time Warner Center in New York City.
Made in L.A. follows the remarkable story of three Latina immigrants working in Los Angeles garment sweatshops as they embark on a three-year odyssey to win basic labor protections from a mega-trendy clothing retailer. In intimate verite style, Made in L.A. reveals the impact of the struggle on each woman’s life as they are gradually transformed by the experience.
In addition to this nomination, Made in L.A. recently received a Henry Hampton Award from the Council on Foundations and was nominated for the International Documentary Association's Pare Lorentz Award. Bahar’s film was screened at Drexel last October.

Recreational Tennis Courts Now Open
The new Drexel Recreational Sports tennis courts at 34th Street and Lancaster Avenue are now open for play from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily for Drexel students, faculty, staff and alumni.
Players should be prepared to show valid Drexel University ID upon request. Alumni must present a University-issued alumni verification card or athletics facility card. To prevent injury and damage to the court surface, appropriate footwear should be worn at all times.
The Athletic Department will have an official grand-opening celebration for the new tennis courts during Welcome Back Week on Thursday, September 25, 2008, at 5:30 p.m.

IWHL Lecture: Osteoarthritis Update
The Drexel University College of Medicine's Institute for Women's Health and Leadership will sponsor a lecture "Osteoarthritis Update: Genetic Analyses Identify Gender Differences in Disease Initiation and Progression" on Tuesday, September 9, 2008, from 11 a.m. to noon, at the Bio-Chemistry Conference Room, 11th floor, New College Building (245 N.15th Street).
Dr. Charlene J. Williams, principal investigator, Center for Translational Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University, will present the lecture.

School Library Media Info Session
The iSchool at Drexel, College of Information Sciences and Technology, will host an information session on Wednesday, September 10, 2008, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in room 14, Rush Building (30 N. 33rd Street).
Information will be provided about the School Library Media concentration within the master of science degree in Library and Information Science for those interested in working in a K-12 school library in a public or private school. The program is designed to prepare graduates for certification as school librarians by the Pennsylvania Department of Education, meets the requirements of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and provides a strong basis for obtaining certification or licensure in other states.
Dr. Delia Neuman, director of the School Library Media Program, will host this in-depth information session, and representatives from The iSchool’s admissions department will also be available to answer questions about admissions requirements and financial aid.

Drexel’s RePlay Lab is featured in a Wired story about computer interfaces published Sept. 1, 2008. Dr. Paul Diefenbach, codirector of the RePlay Lab and assistant professor of digital media, is quoted in the story. The story was syndicated on Engadget.com and Portfolio.com.
