iSchool Named Among "Most Innovative"

The iSchool at Drexel, College of Information Science and Technology, was chosen by Computerworld magazine as one of the 56 “most innovative” IT schools in the nation.

Computerworld polled IT executives and academics and asked them to name “graduate-level IT programs and schools that are giving graduates the best deal in terms of salary increases or promotions vs. cost of tuition, and that are best at gearing their curriculum to the everyday demands of today’s IT workplace.”

DAC Main Entrance Closed for Construction

Due to the construction of the new Recreation Center, the main entrance to the Daskalakis Athletic Center will be closed. All pedestrian traffic will now enter via the north entrance, located on Lancaster Walk (33rd Street, north of Market Street).

This Week at World Cafe Live

Donna the Buffalo (above) will perform on Thursday, September 4, 2008 at 7:30 p.m. at the World Cafe Live (3025 Walnut Street).

Donna the Buffalo is 20 years young this year and as energized as ever. Their seventh record, Silverlined, which was released on July 8, 2008 on Sugar Hill Records, builds on Donna the Buffalo's signature sound: a bedrock of traditional mountain music infused with elements of Cajun, rock, folk, reggae and country. Lecture on Future Trends in Senior Living

The Interior Design Program will present a lecture, "Trends for the New Consumer, Future Senior Living," on September 4, 2008, at 6 p.m. in Nesbitt Hall (33rd and Market Streets).

America's elderly population is growing larger as we live longer. Senior citizens have special needs and are becoming more demanding about what they require to make their lives healthier, more enjoyable and productive. The Interior Design Program is conducting an extensive year-long design project to meet the housing demands of today's seniors.

A reception at 5 p.m. will preceed the lecture. The reception and lecture are free and open to the public.

Westphal College to Host Concert

The Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design will host  the concert "Indigenous Pitch" on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, September 5, 6 and 7, 2008, at Mandell Theater (32nd and Chestnut Streets).

Performance times are: Friday, September 5 at 7 p.m., Saturday, September 6 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. and Sunday, September 7 at 7 p.m.

Indigenous Pitch has been described as delivering a torrential mash-up of insanity: hip-hop, theater, motion-capture animation, multimedia, dance and aerial stuntwork.

The featured groups are Binc, Illadelphlave, Stephen Welsh/SWERVE, Underground Dance Works and Surge.

Digital Media alumna Lauren Mandilian will be the special guest performer.

International Travel Awards

The Office of International Programs and the Office of Faculty Development and Equity announce the International Travel Awards for faculty and the Office of International Programs announces the International Travel Awards for graduate students.

The competitive International Travel Award Program provides assistance to full-time faculty and graduate students for participation in an international conference outside the United States within the participant's professional field.

The application deadline for travel between December 1, 2008 and February 28, 2009, is Thursday, October 30, 2008.

Bus Trip to Little Italy in NYC

The Italian Students Organization will sponsor a trip to the 81st San Gennaro Italian Festival in the Little Italy section of New York City on Saturday, September 13, 2008, with round-trip charter bus transportation departing at 10 a.m. from MacAlister Hall (33rd and Chestnut Streets) and returning at 7 p.m.

Attendees are free to spend the day doing as they wish. Tickets require a $20 deposit, of which $15 will be refunded. Deposits are due by Friday, September 5.

School Library Media Information Session

The iSchool at Drexel, College of Information Sciences and Technology, will host an information session on Wednesday, September 10, 2008, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in room 14, Rush Building (30 N. 33rd Street).

Information will be provided about the School Library Media Concentration within the master of science degree in Library and Information Science for those interested in working in a K-12 school library in public or private schools. The program is designed to prepare graduates for certification as school librarians by the Pennsylvania Department of Education, meets the requirements of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and provides a strong basis for obtaining certification or licensure in other states.

Dr. Delia Neuman, director of the School Library Media Program, will host this in-depth information session, and representatives from The iSchool’s admissions department will also be available to answer questions about admissions requirements and financial aid.

Sport Management Workshop

The Sport Management Program will offer a sports business training workshop featuring Game Face, an international training and career placement company specializing in sports marketing, from Monday, September 15 through Wednesday, September 17, 2008, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Suite 100, One Drexel Plaza, (3001 Market Street).

The workshop is an intensive, three-day, hands-on sports-career training program providing participants with proprietary sports executive training, including sales and corporate sponsorship exposure. Anyone seeking to enhance or start a career in sports is invited to attend. The cost for the workshop is $895.
