Music Industry Student to Open for Coldplay
Music Industry student Jonah Delso won the opportunity to open for the group Coldplay at its concert on Friday, July 25, 2008 at 8 p.m. at the Wachovia Center.
He received the most votes in a contest sponsored by WMMR-FM. In addition to a 20-minute set before Coldplay's show, he received $2,000 and 10 tickets to the show for family and friends.

SCDC Offers International Co-op Opportunities
Steinbright Career Development Center (SCDC) currently offers co-op opportunities in Crete, China and Brazil. Additionally, the SCDC is offering stipends to help cover the expenses for students who do their co-ops in Japan, Ireland, India and Italy.
The Vidalakis Cretan Scholars Program is uniquely designed to give students an exciting and meaningful co-op experience on the beautiful Greek island of Crete. The program is open to students in all majors.
In Shanghai, China, a Drexel alumnus has developed opportunities through his professional contacts, specifically for Drexel co-op students. These firms are recruiting students to work in the IT field.
Outside of Sao Paulo, Brazil, a co-op employer has a Web designer and two Web developer positions available for students who are interested.
The positions in Brazil and China are posted online for B round.

Ph.D. Student Participates in Meeting with Nobel Laureates
Erica Caden (above), doctoral student in physics, was a participant in the 58th Annual Meeting of Nobel Laureates in Lindau, Germany, from June 29 through July 4, 2008. Her research specialty is high-energy experimental particle physics.
Caden was part of a Department of Energy and National Science Foundation delegation consisting of U.S. doctoral students whose current research at their universities is funded by one of the sponsoring agencies. These students travel to Lindau to participate in discussions with the Nobel Laureates, as well as with other graduate students and junior researchers from around the world.
Caden was one of 500 applicants to receive an invitation among the more than 20,000 young researchers who applied.

Community Outreach by Pa. Governor's School
Students from the Pennsylvania Governor’s School for Information, Society and Technology (PGSIST) are participating in an outreach track this summer, bringing their technological skills to those in the community. Participants will visit the Honickman Learning Center in the Fairmount section of Philadelphia today, July 21, through Thursday, July 24, 2008, to provide introductory programming and game construction activities for youth as part of Honickman’s summer learning program.
Honickman is a comprehensive learning center designed to help community residents increase educational and employment opportunities through comprehensive technology and literacy instruction.

SCDC Launches Co-op Photo Contest: Developing New Experiences
Steinbright Career Development Center invites students to enter photographs from national or international co-op locations for the contest “Developing New Experiences” by Friday, September 26, 2008.
What to enter:
Inventive and imaginative photographs that showcase Drexel students living outside the Philadelphia area or abroad; Drexel students on the job; urban and rural landscapes; native people in host countries
What contestants can win:
First prize: $300; Second prize: $150; Third prize: $50

CoAS and IAS to Host July International Café
The College of Arts and Sciences and International Area Studies will host their July International Café on Wednesday, July 23, 2008, from noon to 1:30 p.m. in room 2020, MacAlister Hall (33rd and Chestnut Streets).
This month’s cafe will feature an informal lunch with the Institute for Outstanding European Students. The Institute hosts 24 students from Denmark, France, The Netherlands, Portugal, Norway, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom for a five-week program at Drexel. Four peer mentors from the student body help the participants integrate into campus and community life.
An internationally themed lunch will be provided.

Women's Smoking Cessation Program for Faculty and Staff
Faculty and staff are invited to join a free support group to help them quit smoking. Human Resources has partnered with Drexel's Stop Smoking Programs to allow women to come together to support each other throughout the process of quitting. A special emphasis is provided on issues of weight management and stress reduction.
Sessions will take place every Wednesday for six weeks, beginning July 23, 2008, from noon to 1 p.m. in the HR/Comptroller Conference Room, 4th floor, 3201 Arch Street. Participants are invited to bring their lunch.
Smoking cessation programs for men will begin shortly.

Temporary Relocation of the Graduate Studies Office
The Graduate Studies Office location in Randell 240 will be undergoing renovation for the rest of the summer. A temporary space has been allocated for office use until sometime in September in the room 318 complex of the Main Building (32nd and Chestnut Streets).
The Graduate Studies main telephone number (215-895-0366) and fax number (215-895-0495) will still be functional, but staff members can best be reached via email.

ISO to Host a Free Movie Showing: "Life is Beautiful"
The Italian Students Organization will host a free showing of the Academy Award- winning movie "La Vita è Bella", or "Life is Beautiful," on Thursday, July 24, 2008 at 8 p.m. in The Quad (between Chestnut and Market Streets and 32nd and 33rd Streets).

The Drexel Architectural Engineering Institute will host a trip to New York on Saturday, August 2, 2008, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Participants will visit Battery Park, the Skyscraper Museum, the Brooklyn Bridge and the World Trade Center site. After arriving at the World Trade Center site, participants may spend their time as they wish.
Cost is $15, which includes admission to the Skyscraper Museum. Transportation is hosted by the Architectural Engineering Institute.

Dr. Yury Gogotsi, associate dean in the College of Engineering, professor of materials science and engineering and director of the A.J. Drexel Nanotechnology Institute, and Drexel’s collaboration with the technology commercialization company Y-Carbon Inc. were the focus of an article published in the Philadelphia Business Journal July 18, 2008.
