University Technology Commercialization Office Participates in BIO 2005

Drexel's Technology Commercialization Office participated in BIO 2005, the Biotechnology Industrial Organization's annual international convention, held in Philadelphia June 19-22, 2005.

Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity Members Volunteer to Improve Park

Forty volunteers from Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity spent Saturday, July 9, 2005 in Germantown's Cloverly Park helping the Friends of Cloverly Park install a brick walkway and about 1,000 feet of fencing to set off its gardens and keep away vines.

To create the fencing, the volunteers dug 180 holes with a two-man auger, or hole digger, set metal poles and secured the poles with cement. While some volunteers leveled the poles and ensured they were upright, others hauled buckets of cement for the fence holes and bags of sand for the pathway. Other volunteers laid brick or wrestled with vines and brush.

Funding for the improvements to Cloverly Park, one of two small Philadelphia parks selected for this year's Growing the Neighborhood Initiative, was provided by ACE/INA, NovaCare, the William Penn Foundation and the mayor's Neighborhood Transformation Initiative. Because Friends of Cloverly Park called on volunteer labor for the work, extra grant money is available for materials and more projects can be completed.

Located at Schoolhouse Lane and Wissahickon Avenue, Cloverly Park was once part of the Clark estate and had fallen into ruin by the 1980s. Through community efforts, its play area, specimen trees, gardens and small meadow have been restored.
