College of Nursing and Health Professions Receives Major HRSA Grant

Dr. Gloria Donnelly, dean, College of Nursing and Health Professions, announced that Dr. Linda Wilson (above), assistant professor of nursing, was awarded a grant of nearly $1.5 million from the Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA).

The grant, “Faculty Development: Integrating Technology into Nursing Education and Practice,” will support development in the use of technology for the nursing faculty of Drexel’s partner schools: Bloomsburg University, the Community College of Philadelphia and Howard University in Washington, D.C.

CoE Teachers Programs to Begin This Week

This week the College of Engineering will welcome 34 teachers to its Research Experiences for Teachers (RET) programs, sponsored by the National Science Foundation.

Middle school, high school and community college teachers from throughout the Delaware Valley will receive hands-on experience in CoE research labs for five to six weeks. In addition, they will receive training in Web design, lesson planning and grant writing as well as other professional development.

CoE is host to two NSF-sponsored RET site programs, one of which is a joint effort with the University of Pennsylvania.

In Memoriam: Nihat Bilgütay

Nihat Bilgütay, Ph.D. (above), professor of electrical and computer engineering, passed away on Tuesday, July 1, 2008, following a long illness. He was 56.

Dr. Bilgütay came to Drexel in 1982 as a Drexel Fellow after receiving his BSEE at Bradley University in 1973 and his Ph.D. from Purdue University in 1981.

He was the Vernon L. Newhouse Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, associate dean for graduate programs and research (1990-95), leader of the Gateway Engineering Education Coalition and department head, Electrical and Computer Engineering (1995-2006). An IEEE Fellow and a recipient of an IEEE Third Millennium Medal, he developed an international reputation in the field of ultrasonics, in particular Split Spectrum techniques, and was well known for his contributions to engineering education.

In the two years after stepping down as department head of ECE, he continued to devote great energy to Drexel even as he battled debilitating illness. He served the College of Engineering most recently as associate dean for assessment and evaluation.

He is survived by his wife, Kathy, and three daughters Canan Ayse, Aylin Nur and Deniz.

A memorial service will be held at the University at the beginning of the fall term.

SCDC Launches Co-op Photo Contest: Developing New Experiences

Steinbright Career Development Center invites students to enter photographs from national or international co-op locations for the contest “Developing New Experiences” by Friday, September 26, 2008.

What to enter:

Inventive and imaginative photographs that showcase Drexel students living outside the Philadelphia area or abroad; Drexel students on the job; urban and rural landscapes; native people in host countries

What contestants can win:

First prize: $300; Second prize: $150; Third prize: $50
 
Who may participate:

All Drexel students completing co-op internationally or outside the Delaware Valley Area

Independent's Day Music Conference

The Philadelphia Chapter of The Recording Academy will host its 2nd annual Independent’s Day Music Conference on Saturday, July 12, 2008, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Edmund D. Bossone Research Center (Market Street between 31st and 32nd Streets).

A line-up of recording industry leaders will discuss topics in radio, branding, digital distribution, finance, royalties, marketing, international business and Internet promotion, and celebrate independent music success stories. Marcy Wagman, director, Music Industry Program, will participate as a panelist.

Some of Philadelphia's best independent artists will perform at the conference, which will also offer numerous.opportunities to network with top industry professionals and fellow members.

Admission is $25 for Recording Academy members and $75 for non-members.

Retirement Plan Individual Conferences

Three Winners of the Baden-Württemberg Scholarship Announced

Drexel's Study Abroad and Fellowships Office announced that three Drexel students have won the Baden-Württemberg Scholarship, which will assist them during their study abroad term at the University of Mannheim in Germany. All of the students will be in Germany during the fall term.
