University City Summer Resource Fair

The  University City Summer Resource Fair, which provides an opportunity for students to get all their registration questions answered, will take place in the Great Court, Main Building (32nd and Chestnut Streets).

Representatives from the Office of Student Accounts, the Student Resource Center/Financial Aid Office and the University Registrar will be on hand to assist students today, June 23 and Tuesday, June 24, 2008 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Wednesday, June 25 and Thursday, June 26, 2008 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Science Magazine Subscriptions Available

The AAAS/Science Program for Excellence in Science is allowing Drexel's Office of Graduate Studies to nominate up to 200 graduate students, medical students and postdocs for a special, complimentary one-year subscription to Science. Interested students must submit their applications via email to Dr. Teck-Kah Lim at limtk@drexel.edu by the end of the day tomorrow, Tuesday, June 24, 2008.

Nominees will be forwarded for consideration on a first-come, first-served basis. Those selected will receive a full membership in AAAS (American Association for the Advancement of Science) and a one-year subscription to the weekly journal Science at no charge.

Exhibition at Pearlstein Gallery: BITMAP

The Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design will present its summer exhibition, BITMAP: as good as new, opening on Wednesday, June 25 and continuing through Wednesday, July 26, 2008 in the Leonard Pearlstein Gallery, Nesbitt Hall (33rd and Market Streets).

The art work on display, old computer monitors hacked into for artistic exploration, has been created by such notable media artists as Daniel Iglesia, Marisa Olsen and Christine Gedeon. The exhibition will also feature a screening of the movie 8 Bit on Thursday, June 26 at 4 p.m. at Stein Auditorium, Nesbitt Hall.

This film by Marcin Ramocki examines the influence of video games on contemporary culture. Following the screening, there will be a reception in Chapman Court, Nesbitt Hall.  "BITMAP" and 8 Bit were previously exhibited at The Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York City.

Save the Date: Drexel Institute on Innovation

The Office of Information Resources and Technology will sponsor a two-day "Institute on Innovation in Training and Teaching" on Thursday, September 11 and  Friday, September 12, 2008. 

The Institute will provide courses for trainers and educators interested in moving their instruction online. Classes will meet the needs of those just beginning to move to training or teaching online as well as experienced online instructors who seek instruction in advanced media integration. The Institute will offer eight, three-hour courses on topics of interest to the corporate training sector, K-20 educators and lifelong learning professionals. It will highlight a wide variety of tools available for producing creative, quality online materials.

Deadline Thursday for International Travel Awards

The Office of International Programs and the Office of Faculty Development and Equity have announced the International Travel Awards (ITA) for faculty, and the Office of International Programs has announced the International Travel Awards (ITA) for graduate students. The competitive International Travel Award Program provides assistance to full-time faculty and graduate students for participation in an international conference outside the United States within the participant's professional field.

The application deadline for travel between August 1 and November 30, 2008, is Thursday, June 26, 2008.

Become a Drexel University Student Ambassador

Student Ambassadors is a select group of students chosen to represent the University through the Admissions Office. Ambassadors play a crucial role in recruiting prospective students by giving tours, hosting overnight visitors, and meeting and mingling with guests during admissions events. The Student Ambassadors Program affords students the opportunity to contribute to the University community, develop strong communication skills, enhance their resume and create lasting friendships with fellow students.

There will be a membership meeting on Friday, June 26, 2008 from 5 to 6 p.m. at the Anthony J. Drexel Picture Gallery (32nd and Chestnut Streets). All interested students are invited to attend.

Pa. Governor's School Opening Ceremony

The opening ceremony for the Pennsylvania Governor's School for Information, Society and Technology (PGSIST) will be held on Sunday, June 29, 2008 at noon in the Edmund D. Bossone Research Enterprise Center (Market Street between 31st and 32nd Streets).

The iSchool at Drexel, College of Information Science and Technology, is hosting PGSIST, one of Pennsylvania's eight Governor's Schools of Excellence. These full scholarship summer enrichment programs are committed to meeting the educational needs of academically talented high school students through five week-long summer residential programs on college campuses.

iSchool Publishes Bridge

The College of Information Science and Technology, the iSchool at Drexel, has published the spring edition of Bridge, a publication that focuses on the individual and collective achievements of the iSchool’s students, faculty, alumni and staff.

The cover story is "Teaching Excellence: What Makes an iSchool Education Special?"  Dr. Chaomei Chen, associate professor, Dr. Delia Neuman, associate professor, and undergraduate students Phillip Cross and Jessi Murphy are among those featured in this issue.

Drexel to Host National Symposium: "The War for Diverse and Global Talent"

Drexel will host the National Commission for Cooperative Education’s Tenth Annual Corporate Symposium, “The War for Diverse and Global Talent,” on Friday, June 27, 2008.

President Papadakis (above left) is chair of the National Commission for Cooperative Education. Symposium keynote speakers will be Raj J. Gupta (above center), former Drexel trustee and alum (MBA ’71) and chairman and CEO, Rohm and Haas Company, and Mark Schweiker (above right), president and CEO, Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce.

The symposium will also feature a human resources “best practices” panel and a panel of university presidents.

In Memoriam: Dr. John A. Tallmadge, Jr.

Dr. John A. Tallmadge Jr., professor emeritus, College of Engineering, died of heart failure on June 7 at his home. He was 80.

Dr. Tallmadge joined the Drexel faculty in 1966. In 1973, he was honored as an outstanding teacher by the College of Engineering. In 1974, he was a Fulbright lecturer at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia. He was also a visiting professor at several universities in the United States and at the Imperial College in London. Before coming to Drexel, he did research for DuPont laboratories, and taught at Yale University. He retired in 1991.

Dr. Tallmadge earned a bachelor's degree from Lehigh University and a master's degree and doctorate in chemical engineering from Carnegie Mellon University.

Dr. Tallmadge is survived by daughters Sarah, Jane and Beth; stepsons Robert and John Harris; a sister; a grandson; and his companion, Joan Carlson.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. June 27 at Swarthmore Presbyterian Church, 727 Harvard Avenue, Swarthmore, Pa. Memorial donations may be made to the church, where Professor Tallmadge was a deacon and elder.

Dr. Alexander Fridman Publishes New Book: Plasma Chemistry

Dr. Alexander Fridman (above), professor of mechanical engineering and mechanics, and director of the A.J. Drexel Plasma Institute, recently published the first comprehensive book on the field of plasma chemistry. Plasma Chemistry, published by Cambridge University Press, provides a fundamental introduction to all aspects of modern plasma science and describes plasma applications in material treatment, organic and inorganic chemistry, energy systems, fuel conversion, hydrogen production, environmental control, biology and medicine.

A June 15, 2008, Philadelphia Inquirer story about Carl Icahn and his commencement address was syndicated by the Associated Press. The story was featured in more than 95 news media outlets, including Economic Times (India), Central Florida News, CNNMoney.com, Hemscott (U.K.), Newsweek, Boston Globe, Miami Herald, Seattle Times and Forbes.
