Drexel Recipient of CIO 100 Award

Drexel University has been named as a recipient of the CIO 100 Award. The awards are given out annually by CIO magazine to the nation’s top 100 organizations that have distinguished themselves by creating business value through the effective and innovative use of IT. Other 2006 recipients of CIO 100 include Intel, Dell Inc. and General Motors.

Under the guidance of Dr. John A. Bielec (above), Vice President for Information Resources and Technology and CIO, Drexel has pursued a strategy based on strategic collaboration. In an Application Service Provider (ASP) arrangement, the University provides IT services to schools such as Cabrini College, Neumann College, Rosemont College, Medaille College and Cumberland University. As an SAP Super Competency Center, Drexel provides SAP academic application and ASP services to nearly 30 schools including the University of Maryland-Salisbury, William Patterson University, Bryant University, Georgetown University, Bentley College, the University of Texas-El Paso and many others as well as SAP education in the UK and Russia. Drexel is one of 36 connectors to the high-speed Internet2 Abilene network providing I2 connectivity to the 14 Universities of the State System of Higher Education in Pennsylvania.

Drexel is widely recognized for its ubiquitous computing environment requiring all students (since 1983) to own a personal computer and was rated by Yahoo! Internet Life Magazine as the number one wireless university in the United States. In 2000, Drexel became the first major university to operate a fully wireless campus. Today, Drexel has over 20,000 registered wireless users.

A symposium and awards ceremony will be held August 20-22 in Coronado, California.

Paperless Tuition Billing Starting Fall 2006 - Set up Authorized Users Today

Effective fall 2006, the Office of Student Accounts/Bursar will no longer print or mail paper billing statements. Instead, when a new billing statement is available, students will receive an email notification, which will link them to their Drexel One account to view the latest eBill. Paperless billing is a secure and convenient billing method that will allow students to receive billing statements in a timely manner and access up to 12 months of billing history.

Students will have the ability to grant permission to other payers, such as parents and employers, to be authorized users, which will give them access to the eBill 24 hours a day, and will allow them to make online credit card payments on the student's behalf. Additionally, students who may have more than one family member paying their bill can authorize multiple users. To ensure a smooth transition, students are strongly encouraged to set up the authorized users no later than Friday, June 30, 2006.

Instructions for setting up authorized users can be found at http://www.drexel.edu/bursar/Paperless_Billing.asp.

As with paper billing, it will remain the responsibility of the student to check for the latest eBill, and pay it on or before the due date. Students whose parents or guardians do not have access to email are responsible for printing a PDF copy of their bill and mailing it to their parents or guardians.

For more information regarding the new eBill process, contact bursar@drexel.edu.
