The following awards will be presented at the University’s 121st Commencement tomorrow, June 14, 2008 at the John A. Daskalakis Athletic Center (33rd and Market Streets). Ceremonies will take place at 8:30 a.m., noon, 4 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Outstanding Ph.D. Award Winners

The Office of Graduate Studies announces the winners of this year's Outstanding Ph.D. Graduates awards contest:

These awards, which include a trophy and cash prize of $1000, will be presented at the Doctoral Hood Ceremony today, June 13, 2008 at 4 p.m. in Mandell Theater (32nd and Chestnut Streets).

The Outstanding Master's Graduates, Maria Lucoff and Robert Mayer, were announced at Graduate Student Day on May 8. Highly commended students were Mark Fink and Maria Sogegian.

Doctoral Hood Ceremony Today

The Office of Graduate Studies will present the doctoral hood ceremony today, June 13, 2008 at 4 p.m. in Mandell Theater (33rd and Chestnut Streets). Please note this is a new location for the hood ceremony.

This event honors graduating doctoral students and celebrates the special relationship they have with their supervising professors. Graduates will be called to the stage with their mentors, who will present them with the hood to be worn at Commencement the next day. The hoods are graduation gifts from the Office of Graduate Studies. Graduation awards will be given out during the ceremony.

Graduating Ph.D. and DrPH students, their advisors and guests are invited to attend.

A cocktail reception will follow in Behrakis Grand Hall (32nd and Chestnut Streets).

Attire is dress casual, academic regalia is not necessary.

Summer Exhibition at Leonard Pearlstein Gallery: "BITMAP"

The Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design will present its summer exhibition, “BITMAP,” opening on Wednesday, June, 25 and continuing through Wednesday, July 26, 2008 in the Leonard Pearlstein Gallery, Nesbitt Hall (33rd and Market Streets).

Created by such notable media artists as Daniel Iglesia, Marisa Olsen and Christine Gedeon, the exhibition displays old computer monitors hacked into for artistic exploration.

The exhibition will also feature a screening of the movie 8 Bit on Thursday, June 26, 2008 at 4 p.m. at Stein Auditorium, Nesbitt Hall. This film, by Marcin Ramocki, examines the influence of video games on contemporary culture.

Following the screening of 8 Bit, there will be a reception in Chapman Court, Nesbitt Hall.

“BITMAP” and 8 Bit were previously exhibited at The Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York City.

The screening, reception and exhibition are free and open to the public.

POPPED! Music Festival Coming to Campus

POPPED!, an outdoor music festival, will come to campus on Saturday, June 21, 2008, from noon to 10 p.m., onstage at 33rd Street, between Market and Arch Streets.

Headliners include: Vampire Weekend, Gogol Bordello and Mates of State. Also featured: The Ting Tings, Crystal Castles, Mr. Lif and MAD Dragon recording artists Hoots and Hellmouth.

The POPPED! Festival is a three-day annual Philadelphia event. This year, POPPED! will use Drexel University, Trocadero and World Cafe Live as its venues over three days, June 20, 21 and 22, 2008. POPPED! will host globally recognized artists as well as breakthrough local artists, creating lineups each night with unique performances in a boutique setting.

The Festival will have a focus on being "green" and will educate concert-goers on the importance of a sustainable lifestyle.

Student volunteers will ensure that the festival maintains its green initiatives. POPPED! is dedicated to ridding the festival of water bottles and to using recycled paper for everything from tickets to sheet music. Vendors with interactive displays will educate concert-goers about sustainability issues.

International Travel Awards for Faculty and Graduate Students

The Office of International Programs announces the International Travel Awards (ITA) for University faculty and graduate students.

The competitive International Travel Award Program provides assistance to full-time faculty and graduate students for participation in an international conference outside the United States within the participant's professional field.

The application deadline for travel between August 1 and November 30, 2008, is Thursday, June 26, 2008.

Wimba Showcase at Drexel

Drexel will host a Wimba Showcase, "Trends in Education and Technology Best Practices in Online Instruction," on Tuesday, June 17, 2008, beginning at 9 a.m. in Patten Auditorium, Matheson Hall (32nd and Market Streets).

Wimba is a fully-featured, live virtual classroom that supports audio, video, application sharing and content display, enabling instructors to add vitally important elements of interaction. Instructors can customize online courses by holding live classes, office hours, guest lectures, webcasts and meetings online. Wimba is available through Bb Vista.

A breakfast brunch will be available during arrival and sign-in at 9 a.m. Wimba will also offer light lunch fare until noon. Both meals represent a great networking opportunity.

The event is free and open to individuals from Drexel as well as institutions in the Greater Philadelphia region interested in learning about Wimba usage and in networking with Wimba representatives and other practitioners.

The sessions are demonstrations of unique uses of Wimba Classroom and the suite of Wimba Voice Tools.

Human Resources will host "Tuition Remission" on Monday, June 16, 2008, from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. in room 116, Korman Center (33rd Street between Chestnut and Market Streets).

The next University City Main Campus Benefits Buzz session, "The ABC's of Retiring," will be held on Monday, June 23, 2008 at the same time and location.

Human Resources will host "Tuition Remission" on Wednesday, June 18, 2008, from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Center City Hahnemann Campus in room 105, Bellet Building (1505 Race Street).

The next Center City Hahnemann Campus Benefits Buzz session, "The ABC's of Retiring," will be held on Wednesday, June 25, 2008 at the same time and location.

Benefits Buzz is an informal weekly meeting that answers questions and provides information about Drexel benefits. Human Resources representatives will be available to present information and answer questions from faculty and staff.

Summer Schedule for the Drexel Daily Digest

This is the last issue of the Drexel Daily Digest for the 2007-08 academic year.

Following the spring-summer term break, the Digest will be published on a weekly basis, beginning Monday, June 23, 2008. Submissions to the weekly Digest must be received by noon on the preceding Wednesday.

The Digest will resume daily publication at the beginning of the 2008-09 academic year on Monday, September 22, 2008.
