Dr. Cory Newman to Speak on Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy
The College of Arts and Sciences will present Dr. Cory Newman (above) and "Managing 'Resistance': A Cognitive-Behavioral Perspective," on Monday, June 18, 2007, at 6:30 p.m. in the William F. Mitchell Auditorium, Edmund D. Bossone Research Enterprise Center (32nd and Market Streets).
Dr. Newman is the director of the Center for Cognitive Therapy, and associate professor of psychology in psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.
Dr. Newman will review a number of methods that therapists can use in an effort to increase participation during therapy. He will focus on managing patient resistance to cognitive-behavioral therapy and ways that cognitive-behavioral therapists can increase their accurate empathy for their patients' "resistance" by trying to conceptualize problems in terms of patients' maladaptive beliefs regarding personal change.
