Behind Every Graduate Awardees Announced

Provost Stephen W. Director, announced that four high school teachers will be honored with the first Behind Every Graduate Awards at the commencement ceremonies on June 17, 2006 at the Daskalakis Athletic Center (33rd and Market Streets). A fifth teacher was honored in May at the commencement for the School of Public Health and the College of Nursing and Health Professions.

The Provost invited each graduating senior to nominate a high school teacher that inspired them to pursue their college studies. The selected honorees are receiving an expense-paid trip to Philadelphia for two. They will attend pre-commencement activities and be honored at commencement with their nominating students.  Each honoree will receive a $2,000 prize, and a $2,000 donation will be made to the winning teachers’ schools.

The following high school teachers will be honored at Drexel’s June 17 commencement:

Susan Walsh, an English at Nazareth Area High School in Nazareth, Pa., was honored at the Health Sciences commencement. Walsh was nominated by Jennifer Cramer, a radiology technology major for inspiring Cramer to become a leader.  Walsh served as faculty advisor to the Nazareth High School student government and senior class.  By observing Walsh in her role, Cramer learned about the opportunities, challenges, responsibilities, and accolades associated with being in a leadership role.

Support Alex's Lemonade Stand at Sheraton University City Hotel

The Sheraton University City Hotel (36th and Walnut Streets) will join the Philadelphia Hotel Association's sponsorship of Alex's Lemonade Stand today, June 9, 2006 from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. All proceeds from the event will be donated to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia as part of the citywide hotel contribution.

June 9-11 has been designated as the National 2006 Lemonade Days. Volunteers across America will be raising money for pediatric cancer research by hosting lemonade stands. The theme of this year's event is "United Stands of America".

Alex's Lemonade Stand was started in 2000 by four-year old cancer patient Alexandra "Alex" Scott, who sold lemonade outside of her suburban Philadelphia home to raise money to help find a cure for kids with cancer.

Since then, thousands of lemonade stands and other fundraising events have been held across the country by children, schools, businesses, and organizations to benefit Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation for childhood cancer. As of May 2006, the national campaign has raised over $6 million for childhood cancer research. Scott died on August 1, 2004, but the foundation continues her legacy.

For more information on the event at the Sheraton University City Hotel, call 215-387-8000. For more information on Alex's Lemonade Stand, visit http://www.alexslemonade.org/.
