The Health Law Conference at the Earle Mack School of Law, sponsored by the American Society of Law, Medicine and Ethics, will bring together nearly 200 national and international leaders from the field of health law. These leaders will discuss new developments in health law, including policy and regulatory issues, bioethics and new technologies.

The program will focus on how to better teach the diverse topics that are grouped under health law in schools of law, public health, medicine and other graduate programs. The speakers include Gregg Bloche, a Georgetown University professor and health policy advisor to Democratic presidential hopeful Senator Barack Obama; Bill Sage, a University of Texas faculty member who advised Senator Hillary Clinton on her health-reform proposals as First Lady in the 1990s; and Paul Gelsinger, whose 18-year-old son Jesse died after participating in a gene-therapy clinical trial at the University of Pennsylvania in 1999.

Participants will discuss cases that highlight new or emerging issues, such medical practice in a crisis, as exemplified by Dr. Anna Pou, the surgeon accused of killing patients in the midst of Hurricane Katrina before a grand jury declined to indict her.
