Dr. Aaron Beck to Receive Award at Drexel Today

The Philadelphia Behavior Therapy Association (PBTA) and the Department of Psychology will present the PBTA Lifetime Achievement Award to Aaron T. Beck, M.D. (above), in a program that will include the presentation of the award and a clinical conversation with Drs. Aaron and Judith Beck today, June 4, 2008, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Mitchell Auditorium, Edmund D. Bossone Research Enterprise Center (Market Street between 31st and 32nd Streets).

Dr. Beck is a professor of psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania; director, Center for the Treatment and Prevention of Suicide and the psychopathology research unit, University of Pennsylvania; president, Beck Institute for Cognitive Therapy and Research; world-renowned psychiatrist and father of cognitive therapy.

Dr. Judith Beck is the Director of the Beck Institute for Cognitive Therapy and Research and clinical associate professor of psychology at the University of Pennsylvania.

A wine and cheese reception will follow.

Admission is free for PBTA members and Drexel faculty, staff and students.

CE Credits are available for attendance. PBTA is approved by the American Psychological Association to offer continuing education for psychologists.

Physician Assistants Reach Final Round in National Competition

Julie Kinzel (above left), instructor, and Dr. Naveed Ahmed (above right), assistant professor, College of Nursing and Health Professions, faculty members in the Physician Assistant program, coached a team from Drexel into the final round of the Physician Assistant Challenge Bowl held on Monday, May 26, 2008 at the American Academy Physician Assistant Annual Conference in San Antonio, Texas. Team members included Jacqueline CummingsKristen Frank, Willow Leitch and Erica Lin.

The event was organized in a medical “Jeopardy” style. Forty-eight teams competed to answer medical-related questions. There were more than 50 students, alumni and faculty from Drexel proudly wearing their Drexel dragon team shirts, cheering and supporting the Drexel team.

Workshop Tomorrow: "What Your Banker is Not Telling You"

The Laurence A. Baiada Center for Entrepreneurship in Technology will host an Entrepreneurial Skills Workshop, “What Your Banker is Not Telling You,” on Thursday, June 5, 2008, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Baiada Center, located on the ground floor of the Academic Building (3225 Arch Street).

Curtis J. Gregory (above), president of CJG Management Concepts, LLC will lead this workshop.

Percussion and Mediterranean Ensembles Spring Concert Tonight

The Drexel University Percussion and Mediterranean Ensembles will present their Spring Concerts today, June 4, 2008 at 8 p.m. in Mandell Theater (33rd and Chestnut Streets).
 
The Percussion Ensemble combines the ethnic with the orchestral, and the ancient with the modern in instrumental percussion applications. The set will include the themes from Mission: Impossible, Mambolaro and The Final Countdown.

The Mediterranean Ensemble uses traditional and Western instruments to perform time-honored music from Southeastern Europe, the Middle East and Northern Africa. The performance will feature guest vocalist Dr. Maria Hnaraki, director of the Greek Studies program, and OPPA!, the Drexel Greek Dance Group.

The Percussion and Mediterranean Ensembles’ concerts are free and open to the public.

"Leadership and the Future of the United Nations" Today

The College of Arts and Sciences and International Area Studies will present "Leadership and the Future of the United Nations: A U.S. Perspective" with Hugh Dugan today, June 4, 2008, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the University Club, 6th floor, MacAlister Hall (33rd and Market Streets).

Dugan is a U.S. delegate to the United Nations and a member of the U.S. Diplomatic Corps. He manages matters related to reforming the United Nations and to strategic planning for effective U.S. participation in the United Nations.

Jazz Concert Today: African American Composers

The Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design will present "Jazz: African American Composers and the Great American Songbook" today, June 4, 2008 at noon in the Living Arts Lounge, Mandell Theater (33rd and Chestnut Streets).

This concert will feature works from various genres and styles of African American music including spirituals, jazz, blues and the musical theater. The music will be performed by the George Starks Quartet, which features Starks on alto saxophone, John Ellis on piano, Edward Crockett on bass and Alan Nelson on drums.

The performance is free and open to the public.

NCCE to Present: "The War for Diverse and Global Talent"

Drexel will host the National Commission for Cooperative Education’s Tenth Annual Corporate Symposium, “The War for Diverse and Global Talent,” on Friday, June 27, 2008.

Dr. Papadakis (above left) is chair of the National Commission for Cooperative Education. Symposium keynote speakers will be Raj J. Gupta (above center), former Drexel trustee and alum (MBA ’71) and chairman and CEO, Rohm and Haas Company, and Mark Schweiker (above right), president and CEO, Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce.

The symposium will also feature a human resources “best practices” panel and a panel of university presidents.

Freeman-Asia Scholarships Announced

Bon Voyage Senior Send-off This Weekend

The Traditions Program, a student-led organization, along with the Annual Fund Office will host the inaugural "Bon Voyage Senior Send-off" this Saturday, June 7, 2008, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Moshulu restaurant (401 S. Columbus Boulevard).

In 1895, Drexel's first President, James MacAlister, would often cancel classes and allow Drexel students to go to Cramps Shipyard along the Delaware River to watch the war ships set sail. In honor of this long lost tradition,  the Drexel Traditions Program is starting a new one. The Traditions Program invites all undergraduate seniors to celebrate their accomplishment at the first annual "Bon Voyage" event. Don't miss this opportunity to celebrate with friends, and to say goodbye to Drexel as we say "Bon Voyage."

The event is free for undergraduate seniors, and one guest is allowed to attend for $5, payable at the door.

Seminar Series Today: "Dissecting the World of Biology"

The Dean's Seminar Series of the College of Arts and Sciences will present "Dissecting the World of Biology: A Chemical Approach" today, June 4, 2008, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in room 109, Disque Hall (32nd Street between Market and Chestnut Streets).

Dr. Jun Xi, assistant professor of chemistry, will discuss multidisciplinary approaches to examining complex biological systems and address questions essential to human health and life. Biology is becoming increasingly dependent on concepts and methods from other scientific disciplines as research continues to develop.

MEM To Present: "Repair of Rotator Cuff Injuries in the Shoulder"

The MEM Spring Seminar Series will present "Mechanisms and Repair of Rotator Cuff Injuries in the Shoulder" on Friday, June 6, 2008, from 2 to 3 p.m. in room 162, Curtis Hall (32nd and Chestnut Streets).

Dr. Lou Soslowsky (above), professor at the University of Pennsylvania, will discuss rotator cuff damage due to degeneration and/or injury, which is a common cause of significant pain and disability affecting young and the old alike in workplace, recreational and athletic environments, as well as environments with a large aging population.

Observatory Open House Tonight

The Department of Physics will host an open house today, June 4, 2008 at 9 p.m. at the Joseph R. Lynch Observatory, atop the Main Building (32nd and Chestnut Streets).

All members of the Drexel community (and friends), no matter if they are amateur astronomers or just interested in star-gazing, are invited to come and see Saturn, Mars, the Pleiades, the Beehive and the Great Nebula in Orion, and check out two new hand-powered telescopes the University has acquired.
