Concert Band to Present Spring Concert This Weekend

The Drexel University Concert Band will present its Spring Concert on Sunday, June 1, 2008 at 7 p.m. in Mandell Theater (33rd and Chestnut Streets).

The Concert Band performs classic and contemporary band literature of the highest quality on woodwind, brass and percussion instruments. This concert’s theme is “Folk Wisdom,” and will feature a presentation of music informed by folk music traditions. 

Student Concerto Contest winners Joel Collier (euphonium), and Mark Donovan (flute), will be featured. This program will also include the world premiere of Drexel faculty member Luke Abruzzo’s Reflections of Prague, composed this year for the Drexel band.

The Concert Band performance is free and open to the public.

Health Law Conference June 5 to 7

The Health Law Conference at the Earle Mack School of Law, sponsored by the American Society of Law, Medicine and Ethics, will bring together nearly 200 national and international leaders from the field of health law. These leaders will discuss new developments in health law, including policy and regulatory issues, bioethics and new technologies. The program will focus on how to better teach the diverse topics that group under health law in schools of law, public health, medicine and other graduate programs.

Early registration begins on Thursday, June 5, 2008 at 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday, June 7 and 8 will be daylong sessions. The speakers include Gregg Bloche, a Georgetown University professor and health policy advisor to Democratic presidential hopeful Senator Barack Obama; Bill Sage, a University of Texas faculty member who advised Senator Hillary Clinton on her health-reform proposals as First Lady in the 1990s; and Paul Gelsinger, whose 18-year-old son Jesse died after participating in a gene-therapy clinical trial at the University of Pennsylvania in 1999.

Participants will discuss cases that highlight new or emerging issues, such medical practice in a crisis, as exemplified by Dr. Anna Pou, the surgeon accused of killing patients in the midst of Hurricane Katrina before a grand jury declined to indict her.

Registration Open for All-Star Basketball Camp with Bruiser Flint

The John A. Daskalakis Athletic Center (DAC) will hold two weeklong basketball camps with Drexel Men's Basketball Head Coach Bruiser Flint (above) in June and July. Basketball camps are held in the DAC (33rd and Market Streets) and the sessions are scheduled for the following days:

Basketball camp is for those who wish to develop their skills and passion for the game. Participants can enjoy the following activities:

Basketball camps are open to boys and girls ages 7 to 17.

Registration is required; to register, visit http://www.coachflint.com. Registration for the general public is $175 for one week and $325 for two weeks. Registration for the children of Drexel employees and alumni is $150 for one week and $275 for both weeks.

Film and Video Festival Tonight: "The Best of the Fest"

The Film and Video Program in the Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design will present “The Best of the Fest” show today, May 30, 2008 at 6 p.m. at Mitchell Auditorium, Edmund D. Bossone Research Enterprise Center (Market Street between 31st and 32nd Streets).

This film and video student showcase will screen the films and present the awards all during the course of one evening. Faculty will judge which student films deserve recognition in eleven different categories, including best senior project, screenwriting, directing, producing, best narrative and best documentary. 

The show is free and open to the public.

Biotechnology Workshop Tomorrow: Cognitive and Attentional Disorders

The Translational Medicine and Applied Biotechnology Workshop Series will present "Pharmacology, Physiology and Behavioral Testing of Drugs Used to Treat Cognitive and Attentional Disorders" on Saturday, May 31, 2008, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Geary Auditorium B, New College Building (245 N.15th Street).

A continental breakfast will be served at 8:30 a.m., and lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m.

A reception and poster presentations will follow the guest speakers.

Donate Used Graphing Calculators to Underprivileged Students

Phi Sigma Pi and Teach for America are collecting used graphing calculators to distribute to underprivileged high school students. These students will take AP calculus next year but cannot afford the calculators.

Individuals who are no longer using their graphing calculators can donate them to students who will use them on a daily basis.

Collection boxes are located at the front desk of each residence hall until 5 p.m. on Friday, June 6, 2008 and in the Honors Lounge,  5th  floor, MacAlister Hall (33rd and Chestnut Streets), until the end of finals.

Drexel Open Tennis Tournament for Student Players

The Drexel Club Tennis Team and Recreational Sports invite tennis players to join them at the first-ever Drexel Open Tennis Tournament on Saturday, May 31, 2008 at the Vidas Athletic Complex (43rd and Market Streets).

Courts will open at 11:30 a.m., and play will begin at noon.

Tournament sign-ups will be on-site, and are open to all students of all skill levels.

The tournament will be similar to past intramural tournaments, except this time it will be a double elimination tournament. Prizes will be given to all participants and winners.

There will be a barbecue for all students who play in the tournament or come out to support others. Shuttles will be running from the University City Main Campus to the Vidas Athletic Complex every 15 minutes, beginning at 11:30 a.m.

International Travel Awards for Faculty and Graduate Students

The Office of International Programs announces the International Travel Awards (ITA) for University faculty and graduate students.

The competitive International Travel Award Program provides assistance to full-time faculty and graduate students for participation in an international conference outside the United States within the participant's professional field.

The application deadline for travel between August 1 and November 30, 2008, is Thursday, June 26, 2008.

Judaic Studies to Present: Toby's Sunshine This Weekend

The Judaic Studies Program of Drexel University will present a preview screening of its new film, Toby's Sunshine - The Life and Art of Holocaust Survivor Toby Knobel Fluek on Sunday, June 1, 2008, from 1 to 3:30 p.m. in Mandell Theater (32nd and Chestnut Streets).

The film will be followed by an interlude that features the music recorded for the film project as well as a montage of Toby Fluek's art. In addition, a conversation involving Fluek and film historian, Dr. Eric Goldman, will take place.

The afternoon will conclude with a dessert reception.

Hawaiian Barbecue Tonight

The Student Health Advisory Committee (SHAC), the BioScience and Biotechnology Graduate Student Association (BBGSA), Medical Careers at Drexel (MCAD) and the Undergraduate Student Government Association (USGA) will host a Hawaiian barbecue on Friday, May 30, 2008, beginning at noon at the volleyball courts on Buckley Green (33rd and Arch Streets).

Participants can sample hand-picked, healthy Hawaiian-flavored fare and watch cooking demonstrations that show how the complimentary food is prepared.

This event is open to all graduate and undergraduate students. Also, a dunk tank will be set up for anyone who wishes to try their luck at dunking members!

Asian/Pacific Heritage Event This Weekend: "Super Barrio Brothers"

The Filipino Intercultural Society will host “Super Barrio Brothers” on Saturday, May 31, 2008, beginning at 6 p.m. in the Main Building Auditorium (32nd and Chestnut Streets).

Dinner will be served at 6 p.m. in the Great Court and the show will begin at 7 p.m.

There will be a fine selection of Filipino cuisine available to savor before the show begins. After attendees have finished Tropical Hut's Filipino cuisine, entertainment will be provided by members of the Filipino Intercultural Society.

The performance encompasses traditional Filipino dances, modern hip-hop influenced dances and the musical stylings of FISDU members, all of which are tied into a dramatic, yet comedic, play.

All ages and cultures are invited to this fiesta.

Ticket price for general admission is $12. Ticket price for students and senior citizens is $10.

Lecture About Ultraviolet Light and Sunscreen on June 5

Human Resources will hold its next series of physician lectures on Thursday, June 5, 2008, from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the University Club, 6th floor, MacAlister Hall (33rd and Chestnut Streets).

Dr. Christina L. Chung (above), assistant professor of dermatology, will discuss ultraviolet light, what it is and how it affects skin overall. Dr. Chung will briefly review skin cancers, give an update on the labeling of sunscreens and why this is important. She will also address the controversy over vitamin D and sun protection.

Dr. Chung has a special interest in dermatologic issues pertaining to both ethnic skin and women's health. A question and answer session will follow the lecture.

This event is free and open to Drexel faculty and staff. A light lunch will be served. Reservations are not necessary.

PRIME Institute to Host 13th Multicultural Conference and Graduates' Reunion

The 13th multicultural conference and graduates' reunion of the PRIME (Partners Reaching to Improve Multicultural Effectiveness) Institute, Drexel University College of Medicine, is scheduled for Friday, June 6 and Saturday, June 7, 2008 at International House (3701 Chestnut Street).

This event is open to the public. The $30 fee covers the program, lunches and receptions (Fee is $5 per day with a student I.D.).

The conference, "Embracing Multicultural Contributions to Enrich Our Communities," focuses on immigration in education, human resources, employment, health and intergenerational dynamics. Participants will share intercultural perspectives on issues, challenges and resources, as the PRIME Institute network of affiliates and friends, including the Welcoming Center and the Center for Literacy, showcase expertise and programs applied to these areas.

Each day will feature an improv troupe to engage participants in sharing and resolving cross-cultural challenges: On Friday - Playback for Change; On Saturday - InterAction Theatre.

Workshops will also be presented.
